Welcome and nice find. Send me a PM letting me know when you are in KC. I've never dealt with Rennsport KC, but they are just a couple miles from my house. I'd be glad to meet you there. How did the car get from Derby, KS to KC?

They get traded in at a big dealership who wholesales it before they even take it in in trade....they call for a bid and have it presold so they have ZERO risk of owning old exotic cars...
Many people just do not wish to be used car salesmen and opt for the easy way. CarMax for example makes more buying used cars than they do selling them as they take in cars and wholesale them at the auctions.

Hi Tim- beautiful car! I have an 86.5 that looks exactly like yours, and yours looks so much nicer than mine when I got it. Congratulations!

Do you have the maintenance records? If not, maybe have the KC people do it. Would be a pity if something happened on the way back.

I agree, find out what the maintenance records are and see when it was last changed. If it's original, I'd have it replaced for peace of mind. Now if it's been changed, depending on mileage and year when the service occurred, you could go for it. Just don't drive her too hard.

Does the belt tension light come on at any point while driving or idling?

Welcome and congratulations to another Red 86 in Chicago. My VIN is 0872 so they were on the line at the same time. I've got a few more miles on mine but she still runs like a champ.

Hope to see you in the spring!

My question is do you think that it is too risky to drive from KC to Chi without having recent records of a TB change? Or should I just fork over the cash to get it done at RennsportKC?
That's a hard call. If there are no maintenance records, I would probably be inclined to do the belt for peace of mind.

However, there is a ton of while your at it (WYAIT) stuff that I would hate to pay a shop for performing if you are mechanically inclined. (Cam seals, crank seal, tensioner rebuild or porkensioner upgrade, oil pump o-rings, coolant flush, etc.). You can run up a big labor bill of stuff you could easily accomplish in a weekend in your garage that should really probably be addressed.

Having said that, I would be inclined to probably see what the shop would charge to just put on a new timing belt and set the tension so you could safely drive it home. Then when you get home have all the parts together to do a thorough job with all the WYAIT stuff. Or tow it home and deal with it when you get home. Even check with transport companies. You are only 500 miles away. May not be that much.

Barring that you could pull the cam covers and take a good close look at belt and cam gears and if they appear OK, set the tension and roll the dice. I know that's easy for me to say since I have a non-interference 4.7.

In either case, good luck and welcome to the board.

Welcome.

Did you do any research before you made the purchase?

We often see folks show up here after buying, only to realize they should have spent some time here first.

Thanks everyone for the timing belt advice so far.

Unfortunately the sell doesnt have the service history, mostly because of exactly what James said, there have been 4 owner of the car and 3 have been dealers wholesaling etc. I am trying to find/contact the original owner as stated in the 928 Registry link in my original post "the lady from NY" as she put on almost ALL the current miles.

Does anyone have advice on how I could find information on this person? I know it is a shot in the dark, but she may even be on this website (as she too had great taste to purchase this car.)

And to answer Randy's question, I have been researching the 928 or months now and this forum gave me a TON of info for pre-purchase. I was able to use the vast amount of pre-purchase checklist links and other things to look out for when contacting the seller. I finally got the confidence to make an account on here yesterday and I will say everyone has been extremely welcoming.

Thanks again everyone!
