Just purchased an '86 928 (new to this forum and the world of Porsche!)
Hi everyone,
I just pulled the trigger on purchasing my first Porsche. It is a 1986 928S with 50k miles.
It is currently at the shop (the seller is paying to have everything inspected and fixed up my RennsportKC.) The beauty is setting me back $7000 but I am beyond excited and just want to open some dialog with all of you and hear what you all think.
I am excited to hear your opinions and hopefully bring something more to the table when I get some experience under my belt.
Below are some links to the exact car.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-PORSCHE...c#full-history
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!
-Tim

Read up on the timing belt and water pump service.....it is an early 86 so has the standard S brakes and suspension (only the first 1,000) . Looks like a lot of car for the money !!

Nice, welcome to the tank, I would be excited too. Looks like it's a great deal. You know the ebay ad is wrong about the litres, right? Are they doing TB/WP?

Agree with Jim, lots of car for that low of a price. I'd say some congratulations are in order. Keep us updated on how the car is. Get the fuel lines inspected and changed if they have not had it done already.
Love the wheels.

Nice car, and well worth the price.
Check out Ken's performance chips available at www.liftbars.com. (it may already have them)
Also, if that's original single stage red paint, you can get amazing results compounding it.
Get connected with some locals if you can. The community of owners is half the fun of owning these cars.

Wow thanks for the quick response so far! I saw the mis-info on the engine size as well, I made sure to clarify this and it is the standard 5.0L. I wish it had the euro brakes and suspension, still pretty stoked though and it handles better than almost everything else I have owned.
I don't know if the seller will pay for a new TB/WP as when I talked to the mechanic he said there is no way to check if the belt needs to be replaced (is this true?)
Thanks for the heads up on the fuel lines, that is not something I called out yet.

I have an early '86 as well. It's a very nice car and you're sure to enjoy it.
The timing belt can be checked through the holes in the timing belt covers but only superficially. You need to take apart the front of the car and remove the timing belt covers to really get a good look at the belt. Depending on when it was last changed, you should have it and the water pump replaced. Upgrade to a PKTensioner, makes life easier. If you have a reputable shop do the TB/WP then you're probably going to be set back $3-4k more. Do it yourself for under $1000 and you'll be able to do a lot more than what the shop will do for you without charging.
You should do an intake refresh (gaskets and boots, etc...), all new fuel lines, all new vacuum lines, MAF rebuilt. New CPS. New TPS.

The belt interval is stated in miles but years also are a factor. Lacking documentation you pretty much have to have it done or risk bending all the valves in the engine when it skips time...

Hi Tim,
Great to see another Chicago area 928 owner. It looks like you found a great car. Watch for upcoming 928 get-togethers when the weather (finally!) turns for the better. Jeff Spahn hosted a great GTG in Dubuque last year and has another scheduled for this year in July. And Dave Zaprev (dzaprev on RL) will probably have another in the Summer as well, this one in St. Charles. Welcome!

Thanks for the great response so far, and for you Chicagoans, I look forward to meeting and learning a lot more!
I do have one issue right now that I wanted options on... The car is in Kansas City right now at Rennsport KC. I plan on traveling down to Kansas City and then driving it back to Chicago. I have a decent amount of mechanical experience (working at a shop in high school & turning a junk-yard 280zx into college tuition a while back) so I was planning on doing the TB/WP myself.
My question is do you think that it is too risky to drive from KC to Chi without having recent records of a TB change? Or should I just fork over the cash to get it done at RennsportKC?
