928 Electrics trivial puzzle: door chime
Hi 928 electrics experts (Alan, Jim, et al.)
My door chime plays at one pitch doors closed, another (lower pitch) doors open.
Does this indicate a problem in the electrical system?

Come again? :-)
I did not know this. My seat belt warning (on either car) does not work.
What I observe:
Doors open key in:, car off E-natural
Turn key: E-natural. Turn car on.
Car on, then open door: D-natural

We are talking about my '86.5 and '87. It isn't the buzzer sound- it is the nice-sounding chime. Are you saying that the change in the chime sound is a design element?

Well consider why its chiming - what is it for? you say your door chime and then tell us in one case the door is closed - so it isn't the door chime - right?
It doesn't really chime for the doors anyway - the door open triggers the chime only if other conditions are met. It also chimes for airbag faults (if equipped), and for a delay period for a seatbelt warning after the ignition is active (if driver belt not fastened).
You will need to describe better... what do you get for different modes
If the doors aren't open I assume it is the seat belt chime you are hearing
The buzzer 'chime' was only early cars.
Sometime old chime units do make strange sounds sometimes only in some modes, reports of a squealing cat noise are not uncommon....

Engine on door open should not even trigger a chime - unless for the seatbelts - limited time period and the door state may not matter (but if it does it would be required to be closed).
Debugging systems doesn't work very well unless you know the expected behaviour.

I guess I do have a bug in the system then because my door chime will continue with the door open regardless of whether the car is on or off. Might be because I disabled the hatch lock and alarm or I have a short somewhere or something.

Door chime/seat belt
Thinking about removing this relay (928 618 102.03) on my '93, so as to quiet the chime? Does it disable anything? This is a typical a prime example of German over-engineering. IIRC (if I researched correctly) it is $230 new: and mostly just annoys owners.
