If you look at all the new cars coming out whether it's from Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Chrysler, Bentley, Jaguar, VW and even Porsche and some Ferraris they all look a like. Everyone's going for the sleek aerodynamic look with sweeping lines and curvatures. I routinely mistake the Ford Fusion for a Jaguar, Chrysler for Bentley, the new Stingray for a Ferrari, and I have to double take on the new Bugs because the front is looking more Porsche-esque.

I do think the new 991 looks gorgeous though, except for the excessive badges on the back. The 928 still is a class act and will remain to be one of the best looking cars on the road. I personally like the look of the 87+ models over the S3 and OB styles but I'll still make do with my '86.

Yes, and there are some very logical explinations for that. Mass test marketing is getting very good and tells makers exactly what people want to buy right now. Also, wind tunnels pretty much give the same information to all companies. .

In driving a 928 vs a newish aston Martin.... its amazing how well the 928 drives. actually, I prefer it for driving a long distance. much more comfortable and sporty. visability is better. the cars are almost identical as far as power, weight and layout. (transaxle, etc). the aston martin has the engine 1ft rearward, for better balance. the aston martin is as low as the lowest racing version of a 928. BUT, its suspension and steering response is MUCH better, but for street driving, they are comparable. not bad for a car that costs $10 vs one that costs near $60k used, and $140k new.

Yes, of course. I'm also sure the mandates on increasing MPG also have something to do with this as well. Conforming to efficiency is nice and all but honestly, kind of boring.

All production cars have compromises, but the 928 got a different set than modern cars are getting, and that is part of why it will always be a classic.

I strongly agree with this....

"I think the 928 looks a lot better now than it did when it was released... My 81S gets a lot of attention, perhaps more so now than ever before (Ive owned it for 12 years)."

To me the increase in attention and younger folks mistaking it for a new Porsche model is a testament to how far ahead the design really was. I often wonder what would the details of the car look like if it had been rendered by CAD and built by robots. Probably no pop up headlights, but the fit and finish and narrow panel gaps...perhaps very flush bonded windows, etc. Just an even cleaner and sleeker car, but fundamentally unchanged. Fun to imagine.
