Default Kid hauler...Rear seats?

Hi All,
I am kicking around the idea of a 928 for a kid to school hauler…
It looks like the read seat has a lap bet only…can anyone confirm this please?
Does any one use it for transporting their kid/kids?
I have a 5 y/o that loves to ride to school in my GT3RS but i do car pool and can only take him solo.
Thanks

Don't have kids, don't haul any, but my '89 S4 has rear shoulder belts. I don't know what yera they became standard, perhaps another will jump in with that info.

My car only has lap belts. The kids still love it though if I pick them up from school (a few blocks away). Otherwise, I put them in a kiddy seat.

US model rear 3-point belts were standard starting in 1988. The threaded mounting holes are under the rear C-pillars in pre-88 US car.

This is the thread you want if you want to upgrade the lap belt to 3-point.
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-seatbelt.html

All parts should be readily available from 928 intl.

I assume you are not using a rear child seat and just want to place them in back with a 3-point belt. If you want a rear child seat, there are other threads for that.

BTW - my 928 was specifically purchased as a family car / kid hauler after my twin daughters were born. Prior to that I had turbo Z cars (2 seaters). The 928 makes a very practical family car - lots of room in the hatch, lots of cubby storage all over the place, rear sun visors keeps the sun off of them. Newer models even have rear AC. Probably the best classic GT cars I can imagine. Had mine for five years and never a need for anything bigger.

I carry kids in mine. There was kind of a limited age range where I could carry both kids plus the wife. Now my younger (8) is a bit big to fit behind me and the older (12) is a bit big to fit behind the wife. I can still put the small one in the back and the big one in the front and carry three. When a real child seat was required I put that in the front, but once a booster could be used, you can fab something that goes in the rear seat.

My daughter is 5, I got her one of these:

Amazon.com: Safe Traffic System Ride Safer 2 Travel Vest, Pink, Small: Baby Amazon.com: Safe Traffic System Ride Safer 2 Travel Vest, Pink, Small: Baby

There should be an anchor point in the back so you can add one of these:
http://au.picclick.com/-321314642172.html

With the anchor she can use just the lap belt in the back. The vest takes a 3 point seat belt too, useful for trips instead of carrying a heavy car seat.

Amazon used to have in the description you could use it with just a lap belt, didn't see it now, but if you look at the mfg website it says:

http://ridesafertravelvest.com/details/faqs/

The main differences between the two vest types is the allowed mode of use:

Lap Only Seat Belt:

Type 2: can be used with a lap-only seat belt as long as the top tether is used
Type 3: cannot be used with a lap-only seat belt since it is not capable of using the tether
Lap and Shoulder Seat Belt:

Type 2 can be used with and without the tether with a lap and shoulder belt
Type 3 can only be used with the lap and shoulder belt.

Looks like it is white ...... beyond that who knows no history, no engine shots, no interior shots. Value wise more like a $10,000 car depending on all the above...

I use a bubble bum. 928 seats are perfect for kids just need a booster. I'd upgrade it to a 3 point though.

That's high money in the current market unless it is really clean with good maintenance documentation depending on how it is optioned. It would already have the 3-point harness that would make life a little easier.

A prepurchase inspection (PPI) is mandatory with these unless you really know them inside and out. A well sorted one will serve you for many years at a reasonable cost. A basket case can be a money pit.

If the car above is a perfectly maintained very nice "driver" (i.e. not a show car but good leather, good dash, up to date maintenance, everything works and needs nothing) $15K might be a good top price. There is a value for paying top dollar for a perfectly sorted car. That is what I did and have no regrets.

Use this insepction guide.

http://members.rennlist.org/worf928/...Inspection.pdf

Complete (or have a good independent Porsche shop complete) the tables on the last couple pages and start deducting from $15K anything that needs to be addressed and you will probably be in a good ball park price.

Post a thread asking for a second set of 928-experienced eyes to go with you for the first visit. Use the metioned checklis or the one that's linked from Worf's signature line. The car could easily be worth every bit of $15k if everything is good and maintenance is current. It could, just as easily, be $10k away from being a $10k car if it's a little rough and there's still a lot of 26+year-old wear and maintenence items waiting for you. A thorough pre-PPI inspection will help you decide roughly where it sits, and if it' OK at that point, have a top-to-bottom inspection/evaluation done on it.

Keep us in the loop on your quest!

Back seat of a 928 is not a place to make anyone sit for very long. The seat is tight fit, and cramped, very little visibility, and hard to access if the front seat person is tall. Short of a torture chamber, but not by a lot.

White car is pricy. It'll be there a while, so no hurry.

Backseat of a 928 has held each of my kiddos since they were both 4 or 5. 3 point belt is essential and it wasn't too hard to add to my former 87 S4.

My youngest (now 10 - was 7 and 8 @ the time) has ridden to/from SITM (about 1000 miles round trip) in the back seat twice with no drama.

It's actually pretty easy to get two smaller folks in the passenger front/rear. My 14 and 10 year old barely BOTH fit in the car now, though. I guess that's why we'll have two Porsches going to SITM this year

I would have to agree some. Mybe because I was raised in the back of sports cars my threshold of acceptability is quite a bit lower than most. I sat in the back of my Dad's 911s and 944s from childhood up through college, so to me the back of the 928 is OK. The doors are very long and rear seat access is much better than say an Infinity G37 Coupe or G35 Coupe. Also, because of the roofline and hatch glass design, sitting in the back seat my head does not come anywear close to the roof. I've sat in the back of a G37 coupe or even a late model Nissan 240SX coupe and your head bumps on the rear glass.

The 928 has better rear leg room than a G37 coupe or Subaru BRZ / Toyota FRS or 4th Gen Supra. Actually the only 2+2 GT car I've sat in that seems to have better back seat room is an RX-8 which has truely useable rear doors, a little more knee room and space for your feet to slide under the front seat.

You'll never confuse it for the confort from a true sedan or a sedan based coupe like a BMW 3 Series. But overall as 2+2 GTs go, the 928 to me is pretty useable.

As for the community, the Rennlist 928 community is a true Godsend. It is filled with guys that have a passion for these cars and find creative and ingenious ways to keep these "red headed step children" on the road even when the factory stops making certain parts. I've been into a variety of cars for over 25 years and have never found a group of more talented, helpful, generous, and dedicated car nuts.

Good luck in your search.
