Default Those Disc Wheels

Not one to leave well alone,

I have been thinking about the Disc Wheel and what could be done with it with a little milling.

It would seem there are surface milling possibilities to add dimension w/o compromising strength.

VW guys have been doing this for a while now. Making them into 16" versions of the popular mk1/mk2 p-slot factory wheels. Bonus is that you an make the p's directional, unlike the vw ones originally.

I think it'd be funny in the ironic sense, to show up with the 928 wearing the Porsche version "p" wheels while it's entirely likely that someone else at the same show would be in a VW wearing the porshe wheels on a vw.

I hear it's hydrographics now, instead of vinyl...

I think the appeal of the flats...which comes and goes for me...is their understated and simple nature. I do wonder whether some surface treatment couldn't snap them up a bit, but haven't revisited the referenced thread for thoughts on thickness, cracking, etc.

I'm booked to get some new tyres on the stock S4 rims for my DD '87 tomorrow morning (including the 245/45/16 rears - Toyo T1R's).

I've decided I like the original look, and understated is good. Plus any serious Porsche guys will recognise the originality.

If you are going to modify the manhole rims, might as well get 4 rears from an S4 as a base. They are wider.

The flat wheels are forged and much stronger than the cast wheels they were just expensive, too expensive.

The standard 8" rear wheels are ET 52.3, so not a great idea to use at the front. The standard 7" fronts are ET 65, and it's best not to go less than ET 60.
