Default 24 hour Daytona

Anybody thinking of going to the 24 hour Daytona this coming weekend? - Looks to be a good one with Grand Am and American Le Mans merging back together to become ISMA once again, weather's looking decent and so far over 65 entrees listed. Been watching some of the Daytona "Roar" practice videos from 3 weeks ago on You Tube - looks good!!

I've been going for the past 39 years (since I was 6). I'll be there in my 928 over in the Grass Roots Motrosports paddock between Lake Lloyd and Turn 5 (the dog leg), getting there Friday for the Continental 200 along with some friends from Gainesville. We travel with a well stocked bar - so come say hi. This year should be VERY good with the two series coming back together.

I likely will not make it down, though this inaugural event of the new United Sports Car Championship would one not to miss. I was able to attend a Rolex Kick Off Party event last nite at Brumos Porsche. Although not entering a car in the event, they still are a major sponsor of the race. They had a roundtable discussion with Hurley Haywood; Driver Andrew Davis; Jens Walther, President of Porsche Motorsport NA; and a 4th gent from Porsche NA that I can't quite recall his name.

Davis announced he will be driving this year for Dempsey Racing in the #27 car, teamed with Marc Leib; Davis also said he will be driving in a Camaro on Friday's Continental race, but I can't remember the team. Hurley will be coaching Patrick Dempsey for the 4 long endurance races this year, which will result in the Brumos name being added to Dempsey's car as a sponsor.

I really would like to go, and am trying to get a few friends from Charlotte to go. I'm thinking of just flying down to MCO on Friday morning, and driving a rental car over, and get a hotel on the beach. If I make it I will look for you and your 928 at the Grassroots Tent Chris!
I was able to meet Andrew Davis and Hurley Haywood at the HSR Speed Classic in Savannah last October, took a several hot laps in a 2012 Cup Car with Hurley at the wheel- the fastest I have ever been in a Porsche, what a hoot! I think I talked to you about meeting a couple years ago at the Amelia Island Concourse, but it didn't work out- I go to that every year, and it keeps getting better and better.

I'll be there Friday through Sunday, mostly taking photos. Always something to see, and a big Porsche field this year for the combined race series.

Glad to see some of the Rennlist guys will be there. The PCA corral is always a good spot to hang out as well. They are usually right next to the dog leg at the infield. Qualifying is today. I hope I can find an online stream. I'm really curious how the DP cars qualify against the ALMS P2 cars.

Hurley was a childhood hero of mine. This is circa 1976. Wish he hadn't retired. I was hoping to get the same photo of him with my daughters before he stopped racing.

You can find a few photos of Hurley in the links below of last years Rolex 24 Hour Race.

Didn't see any 928's last year, but there were a few at the race in 2012.

My Daughter and Son in law where there for the first time. They were in Florida for an auction. No film crew but she called to say what a great event and how many Porsche cars were in the corral ! Really liked how close you could get to the track...

I believe there were three 928s this year, (one in the coral on Saturday, one parked by intself near NASCAR 1, and mine in the GRM paddock). I have NEVER had so many comments and compliments on my car. It was really fun. Seems like a lot of older car guys have stories about how they had one back in the 80s.

Also, most people got a kick out of the fact mine has two baby seats in the back, illustrating the practical nature of our family GT car.

I never made it down for the race -my race buddies , that where supposed go with, cancelled on me, so I watched most of it on TV. Certainly not as good as being there. Sebring will be coming up quickly in March, and I won't miss that one!

Default Photos - Rolex 24

Sorry I missed seeing you and your car, Chris. I missed the other 928's as well. Thought I had found everything in the Corral.

There are some photos in the links below. It is best to view them in full-screen mode to see the most detail.

There is a little something for everyone (perhaps even the part number for a 991 RSR driver's side window, or how best to haul firewood in your 356). And some great cars too.
