Default S4 Door Speaker options

I'm getting ready to do a stereo upgrade in my 1987 928S4. I have a couple of issues, one is that my speaker grills are not in very good shape, and the plastic trim is missing from one tweeter grill. I can use a 4" 2-way in the door and get a grill for the 4", but I either have to repair or otherwise cover the tweeter spot.

What about other speaker options? Can you fit a 3" and a 5.25" in place of the tweeter and 4"? I know mounting depth is a problem.

Thanks,
-Joel.

Here is a pic of what I did with my doors.

The bass 4" speaker was simply replaced.
The silk midrange replaced the original factory tweeter. I did have to enlarge the hole somewhat and drill new mounting holes but it was straightforward.
The silk tweeter was mounted in a triangulated fashion between both. The passive 3-way network is mounted inside the door skin.

I bought 4" woofer / tweeter separates from MB Quart. The 4" woofer fits perfectly in the factory hole without any cutting, and you can use the factory grill . The old tweeter can be removed from it surrounding mounting bucket and the new MB Quart tweeter can be mounted in its place with just a little Dremel tool work, some sheet styrene plastic, and some silicone......it will even look factory using the stock grill again. In your case, it may just be best to buy a new tweeter grill or fix the old one and then move forward. Personally I hate to see "block offs" of speakers in any car......just looks cheap, especially when with just a little more time and effort the results CAN look factory and sound 10 times better.

Thanks for the replies. Bernie, how big are those 3-way seperates? Not a bad look. I'd prefer plainer grills for a more stock look, but that should not be a problem.

Mike, it's good to know a decent tweeter can be installed in the stock mount. I'd prefer stock-looking aftermarket grills though, as the stock pieces are so fragile. The ones I have that are not broken are cracked.

I'd also like to get a larger speaker in there (as long as it looks good) as it's so much easier it get good sound out of a larger speaker.

Hey Joel,

4" bass
3" silk mid
1" silk tweeter

The only part that I am unhappy with is the 4" grille. Looks kinda "stereoguy" if you get my drift.
I like the mid and tweet due to the machined aluminum. It will work nicely once I get around to some Jager upgrades.
I have communicated with the company that builds these drivers (Beyma) to request a 4" driver that is similiar in appearance to the other components. I will post a followup if I get a response.
As a band-aid, I am going to apply some acoustic foam to the grille to block out the driver itself. This should help to clean up the look a bit.
The sound of these components is awesome and was definately worth moving away form the stock look.
Since this car will probably never have any collector value, I have no problem modifying it to suit my needs/distorted desires........

www.onlinecarstereo.com has the MBQ RVF 210's for $129, free shipping. Just ordered a pair. Found some specs that say this model has a 1.8" mounting depth, so should work. The crossovers look huge but hopefully I'll find a good place for them.

I have a set of Audiobahn in my doors. I cannabalized the old tweaters and used them and their grilles for a stock mount (no cutting the coor), and the Audiobahn grilles for the larger pair are subtle. I really like them. They aren't the same quality as the MB Quart, but I'm half deaf and not as concerned about that when I'm driving most of the time with the windows down anyway.

Worf928,

Great writeup. It will come in handy when I get into the install.
