W8s were a mess. Most of the W12s were good. VR6s are bombproof.

Our fabricators might prefer 16 by simpler means.....

Jim, I know it's an incredible achievement to go over 250 mph, but i never liked the design at all. The new one is a big improvement.
I think Ettore is rolling over in his grave in regards to its looks.
It just never was what i'd imagine a new Bugatti to look like at all. Looks too German.
What do you think?

Matt,
IMO the Veyron is an exercise in engineering excesses. 15 radiators? Tires that last 6000 miles and cost 20,000 euros to replace? WTF? But, it goes 250-253 mph they tell us at least 30 times in the video . Whoopee! see http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2012/...c-cts-v-coupe/
http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2011/...le-from-texas/
AS you can see 242mph and 275mph can be achieved by Chevy engines in cars readily driven on the street. It has been said that John Hennessy has a 4 door Caddy that lays down 2000hp, has done over 270mph, and it is his daily driver.....

Anyhow, back to Veyron and your comments, I think we are in violent agreement. One can find such cars at the intersection of too many $$ and too much ego. Would I own one if I could afford it? Most likely not, as it strikes too many elements of discord with me. I would prefer a few classic cars over the Veyron.....

By the way, there has been a couple of them show up at the local cars and coffee, they attract some lookers, but not a significant crowd....

Hmm...

What I don't understand about that first video is what exactly does VW have to do with this motor? (I know that VW owns Bugatti.)

Do they want to say that the block is made by VW in Germany and then sent to the Bugatti factory? Or, is the Bugatti factory in the VW factory now?

Anyway, a "high-end" maker being so closely linked to VW somehow loses credibility. OK to be owned by VW, but the production should not be in a VW plant!

The video is very interesting, but leaves a lot of unopened questions.

Which W engines? I've never heard of this. I was a VW tech, and owned a high-mileage W8, and I've only heard of one internal engine failure on a W8 (and that was a technician's fault). I've also never heard of it happening on a W12 or W16, but I don't hang out in the Bentley & Bugatti circles either.

they are showing how the motor is built???? my only guess on that one. nothing wrong with High end cars being built by large corporations. VW owns everyone, lol.

I've owned a W12 for 7 years and have been following them for about 10 and have yet to hear about an engine failure. Plenty of other problems mainly transmission, suspension, and electronics related, but the engine seem to be pretty bullet proof. Someday maybe I'll get to see the inside, until then following are some pretty cool pictures including the crank:

I wonder if this could be shoehorned into a 928?

Looks like its an 01e or 016 bell housing pattern. Interesting.

The W8 Passat was offered with a 6-speed manual, which could have been an 01E. All of the W motors likely used the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

That means that it would bolt right up to the 944 Torque tube and Bellhousing. Also means that the 944/951 Bellhousing could use a simple adapter to mate it to the 928 Torque tube....or the Vette 6 speed TT.

So what you're saying is... Quad-turbo W16 6-speed manual 928 project?

Anybody have anything that shows the inlet passages for the outer cylinders, and the exhausts for the inner cylinders? The above heads seem to be SOHC for each bank ? I count 12 lobes..
