I was involved in the grey market and actually met Uwe Gemballa when he visited the shop I worked at in So Fla in 1987. We were selling his cars (I can't remember the name of the business but it was owned by a Canadian named Claude Ratte). His most outrageous design was the Avalanche, and trust me on this one - it was a cobbled up piece of junk! Oh, it made for a great poster, and it had a Ruf engine, but it was a POSER all the way. Whenever you combine fiberglass and metal, its a guarantee that it will crack at the point where they come together. And of course this one did. And I only saw it leave the shop once to be driven by the owner - the guy that owned Shooters in Oakland Park for anybody that knows So Fla. Ruf also used at that time the 915 gearbox, which of course was a 5 speed at the time the 930 only had the 4 speed. The problem with that set up was that the clutch assembly for the 915 couldn't handle the torque of a stock turbo motor let alone what Ruf did to get more power from the engine. One of the cars came off the transporter with the clutch broken (remember the rubber center of the clutch disc intended to prevent gear chatter on take off?).
Yeah, I remember the Gemballa cars...fiberglass and metal are like oil and water.

It is all about personal preference. I like the Strosek but the ultimate for me is the later Gemballa Avalanche just like the one above and I would really like to own it. I saw one in the UK and its "The Dog's Bollocks". Thanks for the pictures.
I may have to wait and be patient - after all the fun is in the hunt.
I told my kids I am leaving them nothing and you can't take it with you 8>).

And I have to ask: If you aren't leaving your kids anything, who gets the cars??

Roger, 928 Gemballa cars are very rare. I think this is the very first I have seen for sale. Strosek wide body cars are much more common. Most of the widebody cars can be found in Germany but many cars will be exported to other countries mostly within the European Union. When I obtained my first Strosek car in 1986, privately imported from Germany, I think it must have been one of the first maybe the very first coming to Sweden. Nowadays there are a few Strosek cars around here in Sweden, maybe something like ten cars. Three of them in my garage.

Go for it Roger! Join the wide body 928 darkside like I did. I get more thumbs up from "regular" (know nothing about Porsche's) people. 928 purists are going to hate no matter what, so just enjoy it for what it is.

Ake - I am a patient man and will keep looking - once you see the right one you just know it is right.
Gutter-Boy - I own a 928 pickup so I have the right credentials to go further into the darkside 8>)

I am aware that some if not most of my input here is negative and/or critical. However, it is based on the "I was there" scenario.
My initial reaction is two fold: 1) I'm glad that glue technology has improved and the bodywork of Gemballas and the like are not cracking apart like they used to (although I prefer my cars to be bolted and/or screwed together. 2) If I were able to own 2,3,4 or more 928 models, maybe I would want to add something like a Gemballa. So there may be some jealousy involved as I am lucky to be able to have 1 928. And on a personal note, Roger bailed me out on an interior part (which I will let him mention if he remembers) that was so important to me that I would never say anything bad about his 928 pickup or even a 928 dump truck if that's what he had in his collection.

To my knowledge, the Gemballa Avalanche was always 930 based. I believe that the 928 Avalanche shown above is about as real as that red South African Porsche 928 S4 GTE.
I loved some of Gemballa's interior work, but never cared for the exterior stuff they made for the 928.

Nicole, somewhere in the 80´s it was an article in Auto Motor und Sport about 928 widebody cars. Remember it was Strosek, Gemballa and a third party which I cannot recall. There was plenty of pictures to the article so for sure Gemballa has made some 928s not only 911s. However Strosek cars are much more common. Wonder how many Gemballa made, cannot be too many. The third party could have been König, I am not sure. In Sweden an old Volvo station wagon is considered the better car compared to a 928 König. View the video.
