Default '85 oil control baffle

I pulled off the oil filler today on the '85 and this is what I found for the oil baffle.

This doesn't look like the other pics on rennlist for this part. Has the bolt hole portion that surrounds this part and has the o-ring land been trimmed off? There was quite a bit of sealant under the oil filler housing. I assume it was to take up the missing gap?

While I have it off, I was going to add the 928intl oil baffle and a Provent. Should I put this original baffle in as well or leave it out? I have 2 of the thicker '84 earlier gaskets to use, but will be left with a "step" if I use the original baffle. Just add more Yamabond?

It's supposed to have a metal surround, with a rubber bonded o-ring holding them together.

I'd get Greg Brown's version of the baffle - the 928 International one is much better than nothing - but Greg's is much better still... and leave that one out it won't really do much good

I guess the PO damaged the surround or something and decided to just bond this in place. Whatever he used to bond this down was very hard. It was difficult to even get this removed from the block.

Thanks for the info!

That looks like one that DEVEK sold, I have one in my '85, works well 4 me, a provent would be a nice addition, if all the connections are done correct.
Did you find a check valve in one of the filler vent hoses?

If that one doesn't fit the opening to the edge, than you're assumption may be correct, a cut down orginal

I don't think this is the Devek design. The one I have has a 928 part number stamped on it.

I think I could use this if I trim the inside opening of the pre '84 thick gasket so that this piece sits inside the gasket on not on top. I am just not sure it is worth the hassle if I am already going to add the 928 intl baffle and the provent. The provent I am adding will have the same layout as the 928SP Sharkvent that you cannot get anymore.

your correct, just use the new parts, and I have found a good sealant works best if you don't want it to leak, even w/o a gasket

Just to get this straight, the updated oil control baffles are to help control oil being flinged up and into the oil filler and doesn't help with oil accumulation in the intake? Or does it?

My understanding is that the oil in the intake is coming from the oil filler. So, these baffles do help keep the oil out of the oil filler and your intake.

Some oil gets ingested by the intake ports on the oil filler - this helps that, on later models the pass cam cover is also evacuated - this doesn't help that at all.

I'd still get either the (empty of scrubbies) John Kuhn baffle box (if currently available) or the Greg Brown baffle box. Both baffle better than the 928 international type. I ran the 928Itnl one for several years and now have the GB version (better). Certainly the 928 Intl one is better than nothing if you already have it.

This is the original part for your engine. In 1987, they made this baffle part of the plastic filler neck.

They have not been available, for many years. I have one, brand new, I keep just to have it.

There have been significant improvements to this original baffle, as mentioned. And like most everything, pieces keep evolving. The 928 International baffle was a good addition to the one you have. Mine is the next step. Next year, we might figure out something else and have a new design (not very likely.....my current one works really well.)

Note that I say "good addition" Both my baffle and 928 International's baffle were designed to work on the '87 and later filler necks....which had that piece (in your picture) formed into plastic. Both my and 928 International's baffle will work much better with that piece in place. Although you apparently do not have all of the baffle.....I'd consider using some glue (Drei Bond) to stick that piece on top of either of our baffles.

Understand?

Totally understand GB. I was going to try and figure out a way to use it. Your post just reassures me that I definitely need to figure out a way to make it work. Thanks for the info.

I wasn't aware that Porsche made this a later modification. -certainly needed it. I installed the 928 motorsports version which works very well. When you have the filler parts off you can look striaght down at the offending counterweight.. That was an oops moment for the designers. They probably didn't notice it
on the new cars because of lack of blowby pressurization.
