Default Rear Speaker Replacement-Bottom line?

Hi All-

I have a 91' S4 so it has the round speaker grill covers in the back seat area.

What's the bottom line on speakers I can purchase to replace the defective factory speakers that will ideally, permit me to use the stock grill covers with either no/minimum modification (no modification is 1st prize) ?

I want to just carry on with stock car amp- and to keep this all as simple as possible. I am not an audiophile!

Thanks in advance-

go to crutch field .com and punch in your car, they will arrive with direct fit and slight mod needed speakers and you can speak with a tech to help you decide.

I don't think there is a direct replacement. That rear speaker has a built in cross over. If you want your stereo to work as originally designed by Porsche, you either have to get a replacement one or get yours fixed. I think SWStereo in NJ might be able to help getting yours fixed.

IIRC,

If you have a stock system there is an ohm difference between what is in the car and ANYTHING on the market. Hans is selling a nice set of drop-ins I think. Nothing that you can get from crutchfield or any where else will sound right because of that. It's a unique set up. You are either re-coning your existing speakers or re-amping your system + new speakers.

Sorry too lazy to look up the ohm difference ATM.

The factory 6.5" woofers mounted in the rear quarters as part of the 10 speaker sound system are a 2 ohm speaker of what is called "free air" or "infinite baffle" design. There is nothing on the market currently that is any kind of drop-in replacement. 99% of aftermarket speakers for car use are designed for 4 ohms and mounting in a sealed enclosure of some kind. If the only issue with your current factory speakers is the foam surrounds have deteriorated that can be repaired. There are a number of sources online for new foam surrounds if you are a DIY kind of person. If not, any quality electronics repair shop can re-foam and/or re-cone the speakers as long as the voice coil is still good.

What Mike said - I re-foamed my rears and they sound like new.

I had all my speakers reformed for both of my cars. They reformed the speakers and checked all the speakers for proper functioning. They are working great since, approximately 2 years.

The crossover screwed onto the large rear speakers in the later cars isn't electrically connected to the 6" woofer. The woofer is on a separate channel out of the stock amp with a low-pass filter built into the amp at around 1500Hz IIRC.

The crossover attached to it is actually for the rear mids/tweets.

The 6 stock channels are:

2x Front doors with crossover
2x rear mids/tweets with crossover
2x rear 6" woofers

As far as replacements goes - there's a few candidates, and what most people end up doing is cutting the supports out of the original speaker housing so they can screw the replacements into the same housing. However as per the posts above, I just went with the re-foaming

+1 for re-foaming. I've done quite a few. If you're looking for easy that's the way to go.

The factory 10-speaker system is pretty OK if all the speakers are working.

^^^ +1 ..... I've refoamed mine in the GTS ... easy and really cheap.

To get them perfect, I took the extra step of opening the central dust cover and shimmed the cone, to centralise it with the voice coil.

The refoaming is cheap and easy to do yourself.

BUT, there's a very creative and inventive fellow out there named Hans that came up with a great front speaker drop-in set that sounds great and looks stock!!!

So, the optimal solution would be to convince Hans to propose a drop in solution. I would even consider helping to finance the project if that were the issue. The issue is only the 2 ohm coil for him I think.

Can anybody find this fellow and apply some 928 stockist or purist pressure. :-)

Bilal and I had a long conversation about 6" replacements for the 10-speaker systems with Hans at SITM.

Hans may chime in, but this is the executive summary:

There are two housings: a left and a right. So two molds are required. Thus the cost of making the molds results in a too-high marginal cost for the market.

I for one may not have heretofore noticed that the speakers are different. I probably have interchanged them on at least one occasion and not noticed. You might want to check yours: I don't remember us getting worried about left and right
