Default Value of '91 928S4, Auto, 27k miles

I'm interested to hear opinions on what this car is worth. I have shaken on a price that is slightly more than I wanted to pay, but I suspect could be less than what some would pay. I've had a detailed, professional inspection:

Good
- One owner form new
- 27k miles
- Black on black interior, showing virtually no wear
- Clear Carfax, no accidents
- Good recent tyres with little wear
- Drives like new (no engine vibration, smooth gear shifts, suspension good)

Bad
- Front splash cover needs replacing on one side
- Fluid leaks around the front of the engine - suspect PS fluid and oil from the cam tensioner
- A little seepage from the sump gasket and cam covers
- Original motor mounts, working but showing some cracking
- Small dent on the rear quarter panel, will easily be removed with PDR
- Aircon not working - looks like a leak rather than anything not working
- Needs a service (brake fluid old, filters)
- Seat memory not working
- Scrape on the centre of one wheel - will refurbish

Thanks,

Roger

The value of that car is the price you paid + $5,000. Enjoy and don't sweat what it would be worth.

I would say 18-20k. maybe more if the timing belt/water pump was recent and if the mileage is correct.

I would stop at 20, only because you get into GT and 5 speed territory north of 20.

But that's my 2 cents. 27k mile cars don't come around often!

I completely agree - this is a car to keep for a very long time. Unfortunately, the seller is trying to back-out of the deal

A 928 in great original exterior and interior condition are hard to come buy. All the mechanical stuff can easily be taken care of using a reputable 928 mechanic.

What is the condition of the thrust bearing and flex plate? Auto S4's have serious problems with destroying the engine if the pressure is not released regularly. Low miles or not, if the coolant has not been replaced regularly the heads and block eat itself from the inside out. I suspect the waterpump is leaking. Good to replace it anyway while replacing the timing belt and replacing all, all, all, all, all, fuel lines. Lots' of advise, parts supplies here in this forum. Low mileage is nice with proper maint history. $20k - $25k is okay for a low mileage S4 with verifiable maint history.

The flex plate has not been looked at to my knowledge, but is top of my list.

The coolant has been replaced - the timing belt and water pump were done about 3 years a go. Prior to that, I don't know. I would have it redone with all front-end seals and hoses.

I'm seeing similar cars with 75k miles around $18-20k, so I'm wondering how 50k fewer miles influences the price. I like the idea of being able to drive 4k miles a year fro 10_ years and still have a low mileage car.

Unless it's a very low mileage car ( sub 10k) mileage itself does not seem to affect value much aside from how it generally correlates to overall condition.

The way the price was set originally was as follows:

We said that if the car was perfect, it would be a $25k car. However, it was known that it needs work on the AC and a few other things. So we said we'll deduct $5k for parts and labor needed to bring the car back to where it should be. We did not factor in regular maintenance, preventive work, or "WYAIT" type expenses.

I'm sorry that the seller is stalling and hope we can find a resolution that works for both of you.

By the way this is a 91, I would think people would pay more for a 91 than for a 88 in similar condition. $20,000 for a 27K mile 91 is a pretty good deal, I would think. I remember back in spring of 2010 a guy here in DFW was selling a 87-88 red S4 with low miles maybe around 25K miles on it. I think he was asking over $20K-$22K for it. Knock sensors were bad on it apparently because it was low on power, or the diagnostic BOSCH hammer tool was showing bad knock sensors. Not sure if it sold or not or for how much it sold. Sean would know since at the time he was doing a PPI on it.
Now that people are saying "prices are going up on these cars or has already gone up" especially the ones with the low mileage being the first ones to go up, I would think this one is a pretty good deal at $20K. I my self would love to own a 91, the last of the S4. Not many out there for sell...

Certainly worth in the high $20's and a steal of a deal at $20k.
Give or take $5k buy it quick.
