I think you hit the nail on the head. The 928 isn't quite a collector car yet and the used car rule of thumb still applies with most buyers of buy the newest model you can. Also, the S4, GT and GTS still look modern vs. a slightly dated appearance for the earlier cars.

I think eventually the values will swing the other way when more collectors and fewer drivers start buying into the 928. Then the earliest and rarest cars will become the most valuable.

Definitely a widely held belief, but definitely not true....from experience!

Exactly the best looking street car Porsche ever built vs. the ugliest Ferrari ever built.

Erkka and Sweet there is a long and factual thread about top speeds and performance on here, no need to rehash.

Why the 928 may not be a collector car yet:

- 928 production spanned 17 years
- The '87+ models still look modern today and power-wise can keep up with brand new mid-range performance cars
- There were many more early models made than late models, especially the GT's and GTS's; just look at the total production numbers. This makes the earlier models not really rare yet

No offense intended to any DeLorean owners, but I did a lot of research over the years on John D, the company and the cars. So we can just agree to disagree.
I've always been fascinated with the likes of DeLorean, Iacoaa, Shelby etc.... My interest in John D started at a very young age thanks to the Cutty Sark ad featuring him on wall in my fathers office. Not to mention a friend of my fathers had one.....

IMO it was a disaster from the get go.

A good friend of mine has 5 regular DeLorean customers so I've been up close and personal to the vehicles many times over the past 15+ years. The biggest surprise is the solid brake rotors, even a VW Scirocco has vented discs back then.

John D meant well, but Ireland was a horrible location for the plant due to many reasons (mostly political at the time). Production quality was so bad early on there were plants setup in the US to fix various assembly issues from the primary plant.

It's also BS to call it a "stainless steel" car. It's really bonded fiberglass much like a Lotus (it's based on the Esprit platform) with the stainless glued on. You can literally remove all the stainless panels and have no effect on the vehicle, except it will be lighter.

Don't get me wrong, they look cool and are fun cars, but the performance sure didn't live up to the hype or the futuristic looks.
Thankfully the current DMC company makes owning one a lot easier with a lot of performance upgrades.

IMO the DeLorean is much like the 928 in that if the initial performance had lived up to the hype, the history of the car might have been vastly different.
