Default Manual transmission removal.

I just pulled the manual transmission out of a 1980 928,
It was already on the hoist and up but past that nothing had been touched. Transmission was out in less than 2 hours.

Here is how I did it.
Removed exhaust in one piece off manifolds.
Removed lower bellhousing cover,
Rotated clutch and put spacers to hold the pressure plate pressure off,
Removed clutch,
Undid the 4 bolts holding the TT to the bellhousing,
Removed the 2 bolts attaching transmission mounts from crossmember,
Removed shifter boot,
Lowered front end of TT and rested on a stand,
Put the front coupler back on the TT with pinch bolt and levered the TT shaft forward just out of the 5th gear splines to ensure no damage,
Removed the 6 bolts for TT to transmission,
Lowered TT at the rear putting 1 of the bolts through the upper bolt hole into the bottom hole of the transmission to hold the rear end of the TT,
Slid back the shifter boot on the universal and separated from transmission selector shaft,
Removed TT from vehicle with shifter linkage attached,
Removed transmission mounts from transmission,
Removed the 6 bolts holding the rear cross member to the chassis,
Supported the front of the transmission with the stand,
Pulled down the crossmember with my weight and inserted a 1-1/16, and 1-1/8" sockets between the crossmember and the chassis where the two bolts secure the crossmember to the chassis,
Unplugged the reverse switch, and removed speedo sensor from rear plate,
Had a second person help to lift the transmission over the crossmember and lower it to the ground.

I've never had as easy a time with this. However, I really cannot see this working with an auto gearbox. For them I still think you need to drop the entire rear suspension.

Hope this helps someone else.

Showing the crossmember with the two sockets holding it down slightly.

If you levered the crossmember down some you might be able to, but it would require another two inches I think, with that you could rotate straight down and clear the swaybar on the diff housing.

Wow. Didn't know that could be done without dropping the rear suspension. Good timing. I'm installing your shift centering spring tomorrow.

Drop the TT etc before trying to deal with the rear shift coupler, makes it much easier to heat if needed for removing the locking screw.
Consider replacing the screw with an M8 bolt with the end turned to a point.

Proving again that manuals are better than autos.

Just thought I'd point out the obvious for the benefit of Roger, who needs a little reeducation ...

Especially nice to have it easily removable since the early clutches last longer than the transmissions .

Thats good to know its possible Colin, thanks!

Will make dropping the TT to replace bearings in my '87 much easier as I can leave the trans and rear suspension on the car.

Just an FYI
Get 2 or 3 friends to help put it back in.

I had to put it back in by myself. I used the forklift to lift it up and in the general area, but much easier when 2 or 3 guys can just lift and fiddle with it.
