Talking Random High Idle why ?

'90GT

Having started using the GT as a nearly DD while her DD (Hyundai Getz) is off the road for a clutch change. It has gone from a sticking ISV occasionally allowing the revs to drop too far at idle and stalling to the opposite.

Formerly the Idle switch was working properly evidenced by 90mpg on the over run.

Now I am mostly getting an idle speed of around 1500rpm and off the throttle in gear coasting I don't get 90mpg indicating either that the Idle Switch is not working or the throttle isn't closing enough to trigger the idle switch which would also explain the high idle speed.

However the cables at the quadrant on the intake all seem to have enough slack and aren't binding

Is an earlier than intended trip under the intake in my near future ?

PS I know that Hilton will chime in and point out that I've had the intake refresh parts sitting in a box for the last year or so.

See if you hear it click into idle..and if so, then test it out at the ECU to make sure its not also broken.

Even if you hear the click... It sure would appear that the I Throttle switch is not working.

On topic - did you test the ISV with your JDS Spanner? I'd be trying the "WD40 trick" using something with teflon in it (i.e. not WD40) as a short term measure, and see if that any effect after another round trip to work. Otherwise its probably a vac leak and you should plan the intake refresh for when the Getz is back together.

I reckon we could get it mostly done in a day.

Hi Jon,

The ISV I bought from Germany was 49 Euro less the 19% VAT and it works fine. I think Roger may stock them (if you haven't already got a new one gathering dusat under your workbench, that is)

Hi Jon, it's been found that even when you hear the closed throttle microswitch click, that doesn't mean it is good. They suffer from fractured solder joints where the switch is connected to the output pins.

John,

I think Porsche got this one from the Robert Louis Stephenson book of engineering! What a POS. On mine the full throttle one failed, the idle switch pins were fine but...? Still have to get round to resoldering mine.

Jon,

There is a thread detailing this problem but if you need a pic of the problem area let me know and I'll send you a copy assuming mine is still available.

Regards

Fred

Here's a picture or the switch, the arrows point to the two connection that fail for the WOT switch. It's the same failure prone arrangement for the closed throttle microswitch...

Thanks JS

Had one of those opened up on one of Hiltons 928s IIRC we went through about 5 different DVMs trying to get consistent readings from the idle switch before we realised the meters weren't lying and it was the switch doing wierd things due to the no longer fully crimped together joints - connectivity would change just by changing the orientation of the switch on the workbench.

If I can get the Getz clutch succesfully bled I'll look at the GT this weekend. Getz Clutch has same issue as 928 clutch. Vacuum bleeding it doesn't work - just sucks air from outside around the bleed nipple.
