Default Muffler - intermediate or rear

Hi Guys, my car (928S 83 Auto) has a straight exhaust, single pipe 3 inches. No cats, no intermediate muffler and no rear muffler. The problem is that the car is very very loud, not confortable at all. I love to hear the engine, but now I can hear only the exhaust, and with lots of ressonance inside the cabin. I'm planning to silence my shark by installing either an intermediate muffler or a rear muffler. What is your recommendation, pros and cons of both option, intermediate or rear? What would bring less power loss? Thanks!

2.5 inch back to early h pipe then cross over 20 inches back then magna flow muffler to either straight pipe to back or resonator like a dual in dual out gibson……nice growl , no drone

You will probably need to cut and try several options yourself since you have the S-4 engine in an early chassis.. how ever the x-pipe front cat convertor replacement might get you started on the right path.

The 85-early 86 had a dual two pipes on one side small resonator and the pumpkin rear muffler a two in two out version. Euro cars used a front resonator in place of the cat convert quite rare here.

The problem is sound/noise is so subjective and exhaust is really a musical instrument where tones and resonance become so variable as you tune it . It is however very easy to make a 928 sound like a hot-rodded V8 Maverick or an old Chevy truck with rusted off mufflers.

Andy, thanks for the recommendation.
James, thanks again for the support. I'm looking forward to tune the "music", I want a powerfull but low profile sound. Probably will try the x-pipe, a intermediate magnaflow as suggested by Andy, and check if the rear muffler is still needed. The Maverick is already noisy enough, and for the shark I prefere something quieter. Thanks and take care!

Running the x-pipe helps eliminate the V-8 dual exhaust burble at idle sound where you hear the irregular firing of the typical 90 degree V-8. The single exhaust pipe also adds a higher RPM smoother sound more European ...

Not much help, but really haven't ever heard anything that sounds as good as S4 with the RMB, mids and cats in place. If you can get close to that (x/h pipe, and mids maybe?) you'll have a good sound.

Never had so many people (and NEVER had so many females) compliment a car sound as much as this one. Then again, the paint is shot to hell, so maybe they're just looking for something nice to say

(edit to change "RMD" to "RMB" - I don't know why that acronym befuddles me)

I agree that adding all cylinders to one pipe will make the sound much smooth (8 cilinders firing instead of 2 x 4cilinders at half time). I saw that RMD/RMB is pretty popular among the guys here...will add the intermediate, check the sound and report to you guys. Flowmaster for intermediate is a good choice, will fit?

I have a single 3 inch cat back with a mid muffler and RMB on my 81.
It does drone under load at 1600-2000 RPM and doesn't drone when not under load (cruising at those RPM's).
It has a very smooth mellow sound until you rev it past 3,000. Then it begins to get exiting
It does make my car sound like a boat (not in a bad way).
It was the only exhaust I could have because the rear mount holding the a** end of the pumpkin broke off before I bough the car .
Add a mid it makes it quieter and keeps weight distribution in check.

Bringing the pumpkin back is not a option for me as well, being for the cost of a new one or the weight...or simply because is ugly. What kind of mid muffler do you have, OEM or aftermarket?

Mine is aftermarket. It was a custom made street legal race exhaust that some one made, I don't know a thing about it.
I picked it up on craigslist for free because the guy who had it was converting it back to stock because he said it was too loud for him. His loss !
I don't know what company made the muffler but it is very straight through and high flowing.
You can see it underneath my car by looking down. It is 3 inch in 3 inch out and ends in a chrome dual tip RMB.
The system that was on it was a botched up ansa that rusted through.
