Default My first 928...my first post

Dear all, I'm writing from Brazil, and I just bought 3 months ago a nice 928S 1983, black with champagne interior. I'm in the process of getting all the paperwork to import the car to Brazil and the car is in Miami. When I bought the car in Ebay, I hired a carchex and a carfax report, and both presented a good report.

I'm absolutely passionate about those cars and very excited. But in order to import the car I will have to pay almost 200% of the value of the car in tax and importation costs. So, this is a toy that gets expensive quickly, and I want to have your opinion about next steps.

About the car: is a very nice car, I had the change to drive it in US for 30 minutes, but only under 30 mph (no license plates, just in a controlled area). The carchex inspector drove it hard and gave a positive feedback. But...what is the best feature of the car is also what is getting me nervous. The PO installed 8 years ago a S4 engine and brains, as well the S4 brakes. This was the reason actually I decided to buy the car, but I would like to hear the opinion of other who made this kind of swap, and areas of attention I should have before proceeding with the importation. Any repair in this car in Brazil will be very expensive, as there's absolutely 0 parts available, everything imported with a 50-100% tax rate. The car also have eibach/bilteins on it and no muffler at all (i'll add).

The PO, a very nice gentleman, gave me a very extensive (12 years) record of maintenance, the last one about 8 months ago with timing belt services, water pump, fluids, in a total of more than US$4.8K spent.

So, would like to ask help on what should I check in the car, and what is your opinion on the S4 swap.

Thanks for all the support.

The wire weave headlight covers are somewhat odd but it does look like an 83 USA car with an S-4 engine transplant. Hard to know how well it was "updated" but lots of bits and pieces could still be 31 years old .

Still an exotic supercar compared to Mavericks and VW Foxes . Work with the right vendors and your replacement parts and paperwork might look more like standard chevy parts than Porsche parts OOPS I DID NOT POST THAT !!!

Dear Barry,
despite the PO added some extras, this is a 83. This is the only thing I had to check, double check and triple check, as this is a condition to import the car. In Brazil, the Government requires the car to be at least 30 years old to be imported (or brand new).

Thanks for the comment on the wires, I liked too, despite looks a little bit too much under the hood.

Best and thanks.

Dear James, I believe you may have some telephatic power. Currently, my beloved baby is a 1978 Ford Maverick, and I simply can't wait to see the Shark parked side-by-side with the Maverick. Best!

Ah some on Rennlist might agree I sent my Maverick 1970 with a roller 302 5.0 4 speed to New Zealand ,my wife had a VW Fox (audi) I always likes the variant UTE pickup made in Brazil. And some think I know a thing or two about 928s. Question is the TV show The Car Chasers being aired in your country ???

James, so you totally understand how I feel between the shark and the maverick. Actually I know a little bit about Mavericks, but very little about Sharks (despite reading every blog and website in the last 2 months), so will ask a lot of help in the future. We don't have this show (Car Chasers) in Brazil, now we have just Wheelers Dealers and some older episodes of Overhauling. Actually, I had the change to meet Chip Foose (one of the nicest guys on the planet) and he gave me some tips of modifications on my Maverick. For the shark the plan is different: keep it as close as possible of the machine Porsche designed it to be. About the show, will try to watch it in the internet, just found the website, looks interesting.
