Contacted the guys at KZ Racing, the ebay store I bought the unit from, and informed them that the unit failed. They are sending me a replacement. If anyone is considering purchasing one of these, kz racing will stand behind it. Fish

Recently installed on my '78 with someone at an auto electronics shop. Power wire to battery by piggy backing on battery ground cable into battery box and on to positive terminal, ground wire to battery ground point. Spliced into speedometer connector in spare tire area for ignition power source, then spliced into passenger side rear speaker wires (green/white, brown/white) which run along floor of trunk at bottom of tool kit --no need to snake up to head unit for on or speaker signals. Sounds good with speaker fader control at 50/50, front/rear. Tried above wiring scheme to avoid having to find a way up to head unit. Time--one hour, probably 15- 30 minutes second time around. Any comments regarding the installation greatly appreciated.

I would not want the sub to be on every time I start the car. But that's me.
Of course it takes a bit more time working from the head unit, but that way everything is working as it should.
Here's what I did.
1) Remove the passenger side console side (carpet) panel. Remove the passenger side floor mats. Front and back.
2) Pull out the head unit.
3) Plug the RCA cables and the remote power cable (10 feet was good for me)
4) Then run the cables to the back.
- Run the cables from the head unit to the passenger side floor under the carpet on the tunnel right in front of the seat.
- Run the cables in front of the passenger seat. Secure everything in place with the stock attachments or ty wraps.
- Then on the right side of the seat (where the stock amp is).
- Then under the carpet up to the passenger side back seat.
- Then squeeze the cables between the seat itself and the car.
- Take the cables out between the bottom and top seat sections.
- Put the red wire to one of the positive connector.
- Put the black wire with the other ground connectors under the black plastic cover.
- Connect the yellow (if I remember well) wire to the remote power cable.
- Put everything back in place in front.
Done.
Adjust the sub to your personal taste and enjoy!
Great sound for the price I think!

Chiming in that I just installed one of these and am also very pleased with the sound quality. It's a very small sub but balances out the system perfectly. I have it maxed out both at the head unit and the built in amp's gain ****, and it's just enough that I had to back it off a bit to keep from overpowering the mids and treble of the stock speakers.
It looks like these speakers are hard to find now days, so it's worthwhile to mention I'm pretty confident it's a re-branded Pioneer TS-WX50 speaker.
Here's the only link I can find to purchase. It's an AutoSound 100W spare tire sub:

The Pioneers pop up on eBay every so often. There are also BOSE units from Nissans that can be wired in if you can find the other half of the pigtail and know the pinout.

The Pioneer unit pictured appears to have only speaker level input whereas the Custom Sound unit has both speaker level and preamp inputs. Both have small internal amps. The Bose units from Acuras and Nissans come in a few different configurations, both with and without amps, but only with speaker line level inputs from what I've seen.
I installed a Bose unit from an Acura, and I bypassed (removed) the internal amp in order to use my head unit's preamp level subwoofer outputs (in conjunction with a small stand alone monoblock amp). I don't know what size speaker is in the Custom Sound unit or how it's rated but the Bose speaker is about 51/2 inches and measured a mere 0.8 Ohms across it's terminals.
You don't need the Bose pigtail to use the Bose unit with or without the internal amp; just wirecutters and a soldering iron. But if you do use the Bose without the Bose amp, you'll need an amp that can handle the very low impedance of the Bose speaker.

I purchased the custom auto sound unit in July 2014. It worked well until a few weeks ago. There is power both from the battery and the radio to the unit but the red light on the casing does not go on and of course the unit is not working. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to solve it?

pinballplanet,
Looks like you're right about the Pioneer not having gain and freq. cutoff *****. Good eye on that. I suppose this could be driven by a small 100w mono amp and even maxed out I doubt you'd over drive it. Plenty of mono amps are stable below 1 ohm.
vze2jshn,
First thing is to check voltages. If you're getting +12V with the head unit on at the yellow wire (accessory), and +12V to the red wire (battery), the unit should turn on. If those voltages are present and it doesn't turn on, then you have a power supply issue and need to open up the unit and look for damaged components.

Thanks for the response Traxtar. I opened the unit and 12v from battery is going to the amp but 12v from the yellow wire disappears at the wire that goes to the amp after going through the printed circuit board. Wish i could locate someone who could check components in the circuit board. Low voltage from other wires travels to the speaker from the amp but no bass sound.

Traxtar928 - Yes, I am actually using a very small Boss mono amp to power a Bose Acura sub from my head unit RCA sub out. There are plenty of better amps to chose from but this one was small enough to fit in front of the spare tire, hidden and out of the way.
Vze2jshn - If your amp is history, you can still use your sub speaker / enclosure by rewiring the speaker to a small cheap amp like the Boss CE200M. I am running this amp and it fits easily in the spare tire well in the space in front of the spare tire.
