These are old school a/d/s/ powerplate amplifiers P440.2 These are not super powerful but have very nice specs. Built in active crossovers. Between the 2 amps I have 6 channels @40W and a bridged subwoofer @80W.
Yes its a bit dusty...

Yeah thats what I was thinking too..!
I have seen many installs that were done soon after purchase (swapping out factory stuff) they all kept the crossovers in the doors - after all where else would you put them...?
There is actually a lot of room there (unless you have the ugly CD storage option).

Any good links for installing cables from the battery to the stock amplifier position? The grommet into the battery box is going to be a tight fit - should I worry?
Otherwise, how do people attach new crossovers to the door card? I saw mention of the original attachment 'things', but don't know how much more weight they'll take (not having seen to original crossovers).

Mine is not stealthy but I found the new style JL compact series amp is nice. Also rear seat mounted. I like the seat additions you guys have done.
This one is 600 watts. cables close to bat and hide under the mat.
I like this sub options as I just unplug it and leave it home if I need the room which is not often.

I made a fuse board cover from a piece of plywood and plan to bolt a small amp on top of it. If I cover it with some thin black fabric it should almost be inconspicuous.
Seems like a logical place for a small tough amp considering I don't have passengers too often and even then they could rest their feet on it because the heatsink/cover is a solid piece of milled aluminum.

The sound is nice and clean. It will go to ear bleeding levels without distortion - I'll need to be careful, as it's easy to have it too loud. The bass from the rear 6.5" speakers is quite good now, so I'm less sure about the need for a sub. The eBay spare wheel sub that I have to install (need to make some preout leads for the Nakamichi head unit - I refuse to pay $50 each for 'em) is a 5 1/4", so I'll have to see if it's still worthwhile. I wired the preout from the HU and the amplifier sub output to the spare wheel well. If the sub works well, I might open it up to bypass its internal amplifier.

I've just finished installing the eBay sub. It's low on power handling, but fine for my needs - I'm after (reasonably) accurate bass, not shaking the car. I took it apart (pictures later) and removed the built-in amplifier, feeding it from my Alpine amp.
Having put the amplifier on the passenger kick-panel, I left the crossovers in the factory amplifier location, as that made the install quite a lot easier / faster.
There's a little tweaking of the amplifier position to do. It's on U-shaped brackets, mounted to the back of the kick-panel, to allow the carpet to go behind the amp. They need to go a little higher for the mats to fit too. This leaves it exposed, but it's black, so not too visible (when off). The mat can also go in front of the amp - it still seems to get enough cooling.
I just hope that no one offers me a cheap SharkWoofer ..

Why hide the amp?
In my son's 82 we built a custom enclosure with a 1200 amp Kenwood amp, four 6x9 Kenwood speakers, a 10 inch Kicker subwoofer and dual crossovers for the fronts mounts.
The fronts are Kenwood Excelon component speakers with custom mounts requiring a bit of door sheet metal to be removed for the magnets to fit.
Sounds awesome but draws a lot of amps. Currently installing a 150 amp alternator to keep up with the power draw.

Why hide it? Show it off like a star!!!
This is my plan. You have a 928. Work it as the sports coupe that it was designed to be. You want decent audio go for it, the car is yours to play with.

I removed the large PCB, but left the green one, as it seals the enclosure there. I then repurposed the power and ground connections, soldering them direct to the speaker. I promise to put a label on the front ..

I do like your sub grill, but I want to maintain the OEM look (and space) as much as possible. For me, my 928 is a refined (for its time), self-assured, elegant, GT. I do want decent audio, but at sound levels for me to listen to, not those around me.
I might yet be tempted to fit a bigger sub though
