I have a set of head bolts for S4 and GTS. New, never torqued.

I'm thinking $175-ish for the set. PM or post if you want them. This is about cost for the set.

Also have a S4/GT/GTS head gasket if you need it.

Sorry, I should have been more accurate. It is a set for a head. One head, 10 bolts, brand new. If that's too high let me know. I paid ~ $20 per bolt.

Really? I think I bought mine from Roger for about $13-$15 each. Have prices gone up?

Yes. Last year. Retail almost doubled.

OK, if I have this right(I think), there are 9 bolts that are 150mm, and they were $20ea, and one that is 133mm and it was $19. If someone needs the set, I will let it go for $150. Fits 87-91 S4/GT.

Doc after 88 the head bolts got 20mm longer due to the 20mm thicker bosses on the heads. Not sure whats the correct length for the 87-88 cars with R1 heads but for 89-95 (with R2, R3, R...heads) all the head bolts are 20 mm longer.

Just for the sake of OCD- Doc's set should be good for an R1 head, used up through early 1988 (engine # 81K 00120, (5-speed), or 81K 05238 (auto)

So R1 head bolts are 180 (928 101 231 01) and 130 mm (928 101 233 01), and R2-R5 head bolts are 149 (928 101 233 02) and 199 mm (928 101 231 03)


Interestingly the R1 head bolt numbers are listed on the bottom of the M28.43/44/45/46 page in the '85 PET- were they spec'd as replacements or something?

Is there something extra-special about OE head bolts other than the odd lengths (e.g. 149, 199...) Are they otherwise just M12x1.5 8.8 bolts?

Never mind. I get it. 1.5 pitch bolts longer than 100mm are rather tough to find...

Pretty sure they're Grade 10.9, for whatever that's worth. M12 x 1.5 mm (fine pitch). McMaster has no M12 fine pitch in 10.9, and bolt depot only goes up to 100mm

Quality of the (stainless?) steel is important for torque to yield fasteners and i think OEM is just the best way to go for peace of mind. After all, how often do you do head jobs. I think ARP makes stud kits for 928 motors, that way you can just use nuts. Although you'd sacrifice serviceability since you can't remove heads with motor in situ. Need to remove motor.

Don't bother unless your insatiably curious. The issue is just that M12x1.5 bolts in lengths over 100mm are not obviously easily available. I am skeptical that the 149mm and 199mm long bolts couldn't be substituted with 150 and 200mm bolts (if you could find any.)
