Default One head stud shorter? 1987 S4

Guys,

I can't remember and did notice one of the head studs for my car had a different length.

Can you tell me which one is the short one?

I have attached a photo to advise via the numbers.

thank jpc

I think it is #10

You will know for sure when you start putting them back in as it is the more recessed hole.

Hans and Franz should be shot for this. I figured it out the hard way. Who does that? If it was 4 or 8 different, ok. But 1?!?!?! WTF?

It can't be as long as others as there isn't space for it in engine block.

I understand that. They could have cast the boss higher in the head, or made the others shorter or a number of things.

I also understand how things get engineered in the auto industry (I work in it) so some of that was tongue-in-cheek. As well when the engine was designed, there was no CAD to allow them to make quick design changes. But having said that bores and heads are some of the first things designed. They knew that the bolt needed to be shorter but didn't take the time to fix the issue.

I don't know of too many engines that use dissimilar length bolts in the heads. I am sure they are out there, but in the vast minority.
