Jon she is on antique plates here in Texas and they only give you one which I bolted over the top of the rear UK plate. So I left the front one in place. Probably not totally correct but who cares.

There are a number of states here in the US that only issue one plate (for the rear). You can put anything you want on the front. I see quite a few European style plates on European cars in those states. There are places that will make a Euro-style plate with your own number on it. I doubt they are legal where front plates are required, but they'd be pretty cool where legal.
A quick search seems to indicate that Texas issues 2 plates for standard registration, but apparently not for antiques. Interesting.
