I'd like to add the 21mm rear spacers to my '83 that is wearing the 8" S4 wheels. I've read from 928 International that the fitment is dicey and that the spacers may need to be turned in a lathe to work.
I'm thinking of just bagging the spacers disks and going with adapters. Can the adapter also be machined in case the tire/fender clearance isn't there?

I just last friday put 8" S4 rears on my car which had the spacers. The fitment was too close for my comfort and I didn't want to roll the fenders so I took the spacers out. I believe those are the 21mm flavor.
The unexpected side-effect was tht the studs were too long for the regular nuts and I had to hustle up some open lugs. What this could mean for you is that adding spacers would reduce the threads available on the studs. Putting in longer studs can be done, but I think the wider wheels look fine.
Maybe some thinner spacers would work for both maintaining clearence and leaving enough stud showing.

I don't know about machining adaptors, but I thought if you go with the 21mm spacers you are borderline on having to change to longer studs. Machining seems very doable but there is a cavity on the disk side of the spacer (going from memory on the uninstalled set I have in storage) and I don't recall how deep. That might be a limiting factor. But, you gain more thread on the studs by machining the spacers. With adaptors the studs are recessed, so you risk exposing them (hence stud machining required) if you do machine them, right?
Just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Do you mean using these instead of these & long studs? I wouldn't machine first ones. At least not more than few mm's and even very minor rolling of fenders would give more clearence than that.

I have the 21mm H&R spacers installed. They are VERY close to the fenders but I haven't had contact yet. 19mm would be much better for me.
These spacers have integral studs and, therefore don't require longer studs.

![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Which way are the 8" disks larger than the 7"?
1/2" equal, or 1" towards the fender, or?
I have the OEM 21mm spacers, plus a full set of longer studs ready to go. Unfortunately the flanges have to be pulled to install the studs, so the project is on hold until I'm ready to put in new wheel bearings.
Ideally I would like to put 8" disks all round...

I have the 8" rims on the rear of my 83. What would the advantage of adding the spacer be ? Is it just to bring the tire out further to the body, or is it for better control ? Do I need to put the spacers on the car ?
Thanks
