Check your Y connecter in the passenger front wheel well. Located above liner and just over the place where the washer fluid filler neck goes into the washer tank. Most likely broken. Roger has plastic (factory) or possibly the stainless steel replacement part.

Likely unrelated to the running issue - there are common failure points for gas smell (3-way Y connector in passenger front wheel well, or sender gasket at rear in the cabin).

The rough running sounds like you've got a loose/corroded coil wire (unplug both at both ends, inspect, clean and put back on).

I don't think the ignition amplifiers fail intermittently - they're solid state and usually just die putting you on 4 cylinders permanently after that, so I'd just check their connectors for corrosion and move on.

It could also be an intermittent MAF connector problem (or MAF problem), with it activating limp-home mode, although that isn't usually very driveable (its more like a "limp to the side of the road" mode). If the coils check out, examine the MAF connector for cracked wires with exposed copper.

Fuel pumps don't usually run at part-performance.. in my experience they may cut out briefly when they're on the verge of dying, but not for 25 miles.

Good point.

Thinking back now, when my fuel pump failed intermittently... it was more like full go, then no go, back to full go... all on none. I limped it home once like for a for a few miles... start, get some power, go, die... repeat.

are the IM relays in the main relay with the others...

As Jim says, that prevents a fire risk but puts the car into limp mode.

The original IM relays had a visible LED which would light up when fuel cutoff was invoked. So if it happens again and you can see the relay, that would help you see if that's the cause.

You don't have the IM system on your car. Disregard and focus elsewhere.

But to answer your question, no. The one IM relay is located on the frame that houses the LH and EZK. It has a clear housing allowing you to see the red/green LEDs.

You don't have one. Started in MY89. For MY89+ it is visible under the passenger footwell carpet, mounted on the lower side of the bracket for the LH and EZK brains. The IMS relay is a clear plastic box with a red and a green LED visible inside, one of which lights up when the system detects a cooler exhaust outlet at a cylinder on one side versus the other.

Ah, I see I'm repeating what Andrew already posted.

As well as what you clearly stated in post 11 , so seems it might need repeating a few times.

Thanks sometimes I feel like I uave alhziemers...however u spell it. So discovered coil and wire on pass side were corroded. Must been from running without a cover until I got one. So after cleanng both coil and wire no start. Then no spark on drivers side which was cleaner. Replaced ingnition module. No she starts. Fixed. Maybe to be determined. Only drove for 5 mins but a good 5 mins.
