I have a 1990 928 S4. The driver's side fog light is not working. I'm looking for suggestions on how to remove the fog light/secondary headlight assembly so I can replace the fog light bulb.
The owner's manual shows how to do this. Unfortunately, the bracket holding the fog light into the car is different than what is shown in the manual. On the assembly, there is a clear plastic trim piece and a black rubber trim piece (on opposite ends of the assembly). The bracket underneath the black rubber trim piece differs from that shown in the manual. The manual shows four screws underneath the trim piece and says to remove the upper and lower screws to remove the assembly. (The other two screws are for aiming.) The actual bracket is made of black steel. It has two screws (in the position of the aiming screws) and the other two screws are underneath the steel bracket. I can see them, but I cannot reach them with a screwdriver.
How is this to be done?

There is enough room between the black steel bracket and the fog light to insert a #2 Phillips screwdriver into the recessed top and bottom screws to remove them. Be warned that the screws are likely corroded into the threaded bosses on the light housings. Soak them with your favorite penetrating oil for a few days before attempting removal. They may still break off. Once they are broken off you can fashion a hook from stiff wire and pull the housing off the broken screw shanks as long as the ones on the other end of the housing come out. Once the lamp housing/lens assembly is off you can remove the back half of the housing and drill/tap the threaded bosses to fit new retaining screws. I picked up the correct metric pan head machine screws in stainless steel from my local fastener house for a few dollars. Easy fix if you have the correct metric tap and some patience. If I can get my camera to play nice with my PC I'll post a pic of the correct screwdriver position.

- rubber trim piece
- rubber trim with access cover removed
- Metal bracket - the screws to remove the light assembly are under the tabs at the top and bottom of the bracket
- Metal bracket - you can barely see a screw head underneath the top of the bracket

Here is a shot of the screwdriver inserted baside the bracket down into the upper retaining screw. It doesn't look like it is properly aligned and square to the screw head but it really is.

Only unscrew the 4 corner screws - that all that holds the lens in - don't touch the adjusters in the middle locations - try not to even look at them - that's about all it takes to break those adjusters (they get brittle with age). Once its out - handle the reflectors carefully - since they are located in position by the adjusters.
