Default I think I already know the answer...

I purchased GT cams and 944S2 springs with 85/86 spring seats for my 93 GTS. Just learned from the shop that did the heads that they did not use the 85/86 spring seats...they used the original GTS seats. So, there is a strong chance that the springs are too tight. Coil bind is at 1.075.

They did, however, remove the "shim" that was in the GTS to make room for the 944S2 spring (see pic)

My questions are, is there a way to check the current tightness of the springs ( to verify the specs that the shop set the springs to) while the head is on the engine? If so, what would be the minimum clearance needed? Does removing that original GTS shim give the spring enough xtra room?

If there isn't enough clearance, can I replace the GTS spring seats with the thinner 85/86 spring seats with the head still on the engine? If so, is it as simple as swapping out the seats and putting it back together?

Otherwise, I have to take the head back off, replacing the head bolts and gaskets again

Thanks in advance,

They left the one shim still right? You need a shim between the steel spring seat and the alum head.

What's the coil bind at max lift?

You should be able to replace the springs/spacers to whatever you want in-situ without disturbing the heads but whoever does the work, like anything else, needs to know what they are doing.

Not sure how you arrived at an incorrect installation but you need to map out exactly what you want doing and have the work checked by someone who knows right from wrong as it is being done- be it yourself or someone else- that or you ensure the work is carried out by someone you would trust with your life.

Remember, if they are removing something and replacing it with something else there has to be a very strict discipline to avoid mixing the parts up. This is the essence of Quality Control [QC] and Quality Assurance [QA].

Coil bind at max lift is the following:

Intake: .052, based on GT cam lift of .393

Exhaust: .092 based on GT cam lift of .353

I'm trying to find the difference in thickness between the S3 and S4 spring seats. And, also verify the lift specs of the GT cams.
