Keep in mind that people bitched when new springs were $120.00. Add in a $300+ preselector.....OMG!

Greg, you referenced removing the "spacer" when installing the late style shift sping with the steep "ramp" like Colin's has into a G28/11 (early BW) gear box.
I looked at PET for the early gear box vs. the late gear box. I presume you are referring to part no. 14 labeled "washer?" Thanks. Trying to eliminate guess work for next week.
I need a shift centering spring but I also have a track day in less than 3 weeks. My question is.... If I drain the fluid and can retrieve the piece of the shift spring that broke off and get it out the drain holle than am I safe to race? I have a new spring but I may not have the time to get the transmission out, repair and back in before race day. I have an MY 86 / 5 speed.
My mechcanic cant look at until mid next week and that leaves me with little margin if he get jammed up in the shop.
I have an 86 (early #0629) 5 speed with a broken #13 preselector lever (centering spring). It's a G28-11 transmission with LSD. When the head of the pre selector broke off and it thankfully fell to the bottom of the sump and did not damage the transmission. I fished out the broken piece with a magnet. I have the transmission out of the car. The transmission was rebuilt with new synchronizers, 3rd gear gearset, layshaft and main bearing in 1997 - about 40,000 miles ago. The transmission was shifting fine when I removed it from the car and was fine for the two years it was driven with the broken preselector. The G28-11 has a circa clip that holds the preselector to the threaded bolt making the ability to remove it without taking the transmission apart probably impossible
I have owned my 928 since 1991 and performed virtually all the maintenance on it but never taken the transmission apart. I have the time and space to work on the car thankfully. I purchased a replacement spring from Rodger. I've read Greg Browns concerns on this replacement spring as well.
My question is - does a write up exist on how to remove this spring that does no involve taking the entire transmission apart, for example remove the the shift rods to get clearance? I've searched w/o success the site
Advice and counsel is welcome!
I have telephoned Precision several times without speaking to Greg as well - as dropping it off to him to get it checked out is likely (of course it is) the best course of action. But as all things 928 always curious how to do a new repair
I do not know the differences between your transmission and mine: at the least yours apparently has a retaining circlip to deal with, so YMMV in other respects too. I did not disassemble my transmission much further than removing the top cover to replace the preselector spring. If I recall correctly, I only had to remove the shift selector shaft to get clearance to insert the replacement part and also to remove the adjusting bolt. It was then a matter if finding the best route to maneuver the new spring assembly into place while hanging onto to it, holding it in position, and replacing the adjusting bolt (see the WSM for adjusting preload and height), and the shifting rod assembly. Long surgical forceps were helpful...
