Question Cutting out

Hello all. I have a 1980 928 with 110,000 miles and a 5-speed. It sat for several years before I bought it, and needs a lot of little repairs, but it's running. It starts and idles OK and makes good power at low rpms, but when I accelerate to merge on the highway, it totally cuts out. After a few seconds, it comes back, and I'm able to drive, but not accelerate hard. It feels like insufficient fuel. I replaced the fuel pump and filter with Bosch parts when I first got the car. A friend said to check the mass air flow sensor. Any other suggestions? This car does not have an in-tank fuel pump, and I've heard it should.

Many thanks.

add some techron to the gas and 6oz.of MMO,
also replace the accumulator in the RR wheel well.
you may have clogged screens at the fuel distributor the techron may clean it.
The Fuel accumulator can be checked,
remove the screw on the top of the unit if it smells of gas then the FA is leaking internally

Default Follow-up

Thanks for the reply. I added a bottle of Techron and 6 oz of MMO on my last fillup. No change in drivability yet, but I understand these take a tankful or so to work. I checked for a fuel accumulator and my car doesn't have one. There is a well behind the fuel tank, but only the pump and filter are in there. Looked in the RR wheel well, and no accumulator there, either.

More details: It always cuts out under hard acceleration between 2600 and 3100 RPM, but if I clutch in, it'll rev to 4000, so I still think it's a fuel supply issue. I noticed at the bottom of the fuel tank a metal fitting with "Purolator" stamped on it. Could this be a pre-filter? I'm working on using up this tankful, and will drain the tank and check it out.
