You mean the electrically operated solenoid (purge valve), right? The one Rob had to replace when he went through this?

Yes.

Take the hose off of that valve. You should have suction through that valve for only a few seconds after start-up (to purge the charcoal canister). If it continues to suck, after running...it will suck that tank inside out.....regardless of what is happening with the vent line.

As these cars get more and more miles on them, this is getting to be a fairly common problem. Destroys a lot of gas tanks....

Testing is easy....the real excitement is finding one.

sorry for not being more specific yes replace the purge valve,
i dont know how much a new one costs WAG maybe 700.00 dollars

Thanks Greg, Stan and Rob. I see that valve has a 944 part number. It also looks an awful lot like the evap purge valves on my Saabs, of which I have dozens. I wonder if there is a Bosch number that matches up to other applications...

By the way, when these valves go bad on later OBDII cars, they often set a P0444 fault code. They can also can cause stubborn P0455 "serious evap leak" codes. I haven't seen a Saab plastic fuel tank get sucked in though.

Bosch p/n on housing 0 280 142 157

Anybody have a Porsche valve handy to look at? Mine is at home...

I went out to the garage and checked mine; 028 0142 151
That Saab part definitely looks exactly the same- smaller diameter on upstream (canister) side and larger downstream to the manifold. Whether it works or not I have no clue. You could test it like Greg B suggested in his post.

It looks like the difference might amount to the way it mounts...our Saab valves are held in place by a rubber ring on top of the charcoal canister. I bet it would work just fine in a 928.

If I hold the Saab valve up to the screen oriented the same way as the valve Rob pictured above, with the Bosch number and "Made in Germany" facing me, the two pin connector is 90 degrees different. Other than that it appears identical.

The Porsche one is Bosch #0 280 142 151 and is used on the following:

This morning I determined that I had suction continuously through the purge valve, not just for a few seconds on start up.

I then removed the valve and found that I could blow and suck through it freely. In other words, it was open all the time.

I then compared the Porsche valve to the Saab valve I mentioned previously...





...and determined that other than the last digit of the Bosch number on them, they are identical. (Thanks to my six year old son for holding them for pics)

I verified that the Saab valve only flowed one way and installed it. Works fine. Why the Bosch number is one digit different I have no idea.
