Chumpcar rules for 2014-2016 are posted and being debated, to be finalized Dec 1. The current rules show the 928S4 would be accepted with no penalty laps. The car could be gutted, springs cut or collapsed plus safety equipment added, some brake upgrades are allowed as well. Ironically my 81S Euro would appear to be not allowed at all.
How long can an S4 go on a full tank of gas on the track?
Gutted and caged how long would a good set of race brake pads last?
Currently the E30 and E36 BMW's are the front runners, how do you think it would stack up?

take a look at my recent post regarding racing a 1984 automatic in lemons.....watch this video from CMP park south carolina......we DESTROYED everyone on track with an 1984 automatic that does run quite well
I passed 12 cars enroute to the 3rd best overall lap time of 117 cars at a track I had driven only for about 10 minutes the day before..... Safe to say the car is plenty good at crap can racing
An S4 would be even BETTER.....the bigger brakes and much more powerful engine, especially bottom end torque would be quite nice.....I would gut it to the bone, try really hard to find an automatic with LSD, change the oil pan to an OB (early) version add 3/8th oil pan spacer....maybe a larger oil cooler and for sure a larger trans cooler.......done....
My old estate ran all day at 180F water temps (about 1/2 on stock gauge), 225F oil temps (bigger oil cooler) and 210F trans temps.....pressure was better than ever...rarely below 75psi in the hardest corners
Car can run about 2 hours on a tank of gas...maybe a bit less for an S4....real race pads last forever....I get about 30 hours on a set of Raybestos ST43

Sean is right.....remember the car I caught at the end of my video was the WINNER of our race, white-orange E30 (nemo which is funny being chased and caught by a SHARK)...a typical crap can racing E30....but this one was very well driven (home track, never race anywhere else) AND had a 24 gallon fuel cell..............so at typical E30 fuel consumption of 6 gallons per hour they can run 3.5 hours...quite an advantage over our run times....I burned exactly 9.7 gallons per hour during my 1.75 hour stint....
Do I think the added weight, but better brakes-suspension-power of an S4 is worth it vs an early car.....I would say yes....but all that power-weight comes at a price.....FUEL....which isn't exactly a strong suit of the 928 despite the success my old estate has had.....if I have learned anything in my "racing" career is that weight is KING...no way around it.....a lighter car with the same power-weight ratio will always win, but it hasn't been proven.....the only thing that has been proven in crap can racing is what the Estate can do.....and it has proven that a 16V car is fast enough to win...just not "yet"
Complete disclosure...In my experience racing in lemons since 2009 in 8 races in multiple cars here is what I "think" (whatever that is worth) is the best 928 to crap can race...... a Euro S 3 speed automatic...........................
WHY....the 5 speeds will not survive, plain and simple.....the ratios of the 3 speed are much better than the 4 speed, even with the S4 power + weight..... A Euro S 1980-1983 is the ticket.....S brakes properly set up is enough.....with the added bonus of less weight....sure CIS fuel injection will hurt fuel economy but I would say not enough to matter.....as long as it works for the whole race...and the fuel accumulator is a BONUS....maybe 1/2 a gallon, but it all counts in endurance racing...
