And the oil pump sucks from the bottom of the sump, so the first priming of the whole lubrication system on start-up is with all that coolant.
Per post 14, the battery is disconnected. With the engine out, the oil sump will come off and there will be a survey of the bottom-end bearings. The girdle will come off to inspect the mains. The heads wil be disassembled, lifters flushed out and cleaned, cams inspected for damage from lack of lubrication. The block will get completely flushed and cleaned, and everything will be reassembled with worn/damaged parts replaced.
What started out as a question about whether the heads could come off with engine in the car has too quckly escalated to a decision on repairing the old vs. replacing with a used engine. Half-price holiday sale traditionally starts around Thanksgiving at 928 International, so there's a good option for a used engine available. The used engine route cuts the labor down to an R&R, and transferring accessories and wiring.
