Default Weirdness on an '82 Shark I looked at...

I'm looking at this car: http://scranton.craigslist.org/cto/3937756773.html. Just a look, since the seller wasn't home at the time. But in poking around underneath I spotted a hose clamp in the rear suspension. Not sure what to make of it or, assuming the part is bad, what the repair effort would be.

Also, there's a good amount of oil on the front of the pan. Is that a wicked bad thing, or just a sorta bad thing? I also noticed that the A/C belt is pretty much dangling.

The car itself appears whole and largely unmolested. It's had a truly awful respray, but it was originally a black car. The interior seems to be largely intact, with normal cracked dash. The replacement steering wheel is hideous, but the original is there. I don't know where the front seats came from.

Asking price is almost $4k, but it's been listed for a couple months; I'm sure it will go for less.

Thoughts from the group? Significant danger areas to watch for? Is it worth dragging my mechanic up for a look?

The rear is just a sway bar drop link, easy to replace.

The engine will likely need to have a full reseal done.

Pictures of the overall car will help us to give you an idea of what its worth.

I would be inspecting the AC and alternator for ground strikes the AC belt is loose,
This could mean a cracked block.
This car looks like a nice 800.00 running restore specimen.

I would run and not look back, I've seen a few recently that seem to be way better deals.

The oil location is just below the oil pump. Probably just needs a new rubber o-ring. And ,as Colin mentioned, the other seals. Belt on AC compressor is loose. But you probably need to change all belts anyway. Front engine pan looks missing. Tires are completely worm. somebody was trying to avoid spending money on this one. The bodge repairs probably mean some more deferred maintenance elewhere. As most 928's. Respray will cost, deferred maintenance will cost. Purchase will cost.
But with the help of this great forum: if you want it go for it. But if you add up the money to be spent on this one, you might want to buy a nicer car to begin with.

So the bushing on his rear sway bar link went (which is also bent), and instead of replacing a $25 part (used) and 10 minutes work, he put a clamp around it.

Run. Run far and fast.

Right rear tire needs replacing. Those seats look confortable but they are not from a Porsche.

He says he looking for a trade. Maybe I'll offer the 96 Volvo I've got parked out back.

Of course, the Volvo runs...

If you were really interested in this one, I'd offer 500.00, and with reservations go no further than 800.00.
Not only is there neglect here, but with that hose clamp on the sway bar, there is neglect with intent.
I'd walk away though.

No way is he going to take that sort of money. Even if you point out the problems, they'll just wait for the next sucker. I was looking at a 911 once, and I pointed out a bunch of work needed to make the car roadworthy (heat exchangers, front pan, other stuff I don't remember now). The guy shrugged and said he'd wait for someone who didn't know enough about the cars to know that. The car was gone a week later.

But what the hell. I'll go take a look next week and get some additional pics. Then if I'm still Shark-less after Frenzy, maybe I'll make a low offer. The only real attraction of this particular car is that it's close.

Agree with the above.

The only 928 to buy is the 928 with a decent service history.

It will cost you a nice example anyway in the long run, may as well get it and have fun.
