Deep Thoughts...
It’s odd how you change as you mature. There was a time I thought completely different about a whole range of topics. I’ll spare you them as this is a Porsche tech forum.
After work today, I made a beeline to Kayfeild Automotive Supply to buy satin black paint for my wheels. As I pulled into the parking lot, there sat a beautiful 993. 993s are the last of the air cooled 911s and arguably the best due to their refinement. I lusted after these 911s for more than a decade and whenever close enough to one I sure as heck stopped to peek inside.
When I was in my early 20s I was into BMW 2002s. (primarily because I could afford them)
I built and painted a ‘tribute’ 2002ti with high compression and side draft Webers, headers, lowered etc.. I loved it and I drove it for many years but always secretly longing for a Porsche 911.
One day in 1998 on the way home from work I was ‘T-Boned’ very hard in the 2002 and that was the end of my 2002ti. With my insurance check I purchased my first Porsche; a Prussian Blue Metallic 1986 911 Sunroof Coupe with about 60k on the clock.
I’d just sit in it at night in the garage for like a half hour just taking in the smell. I loved it that much. I owned it for 13 years (had an SC also briefly) but I was a dedicated 911 enthusiast, if there ever was one.
Today I walked right past that 993 in the parking lot thinking about how I should be driving my 928 in this great weather. It dawned on me that I no longer cared about 911s! If you knew me then you’d get it.
I guess the Porsche Engineers were right, the 928 could replace the 911.
Going outside now to paint my wheels.-Matt

Back before I bought my car a VP at work showed up one day in a brand-new black 993 Carerra 4S. He was a bit of a high-roller anyway but boy was he smitten with that car. He explained that he had a 911 a few years earlier and wrecked it and finally decided to take the plunge and get another one. You could tell how much he was in love with his Porsche just by the way he handled the key.
Well I can tell you I never saw a speck of dirt anywhere on that car. And it was black! He must have wiped it down every night when he got home.
It's made me think ... if Porsche still made new 928s is that how I'd feel if I 'took the plunge' and bought one?

I thought this was cool when I was 17. Actually it was cool. It was free and could fit most of my friends in when packed properly. My dad tried to trade it in on a new car and the dealership wouldn't take it. It was my first and last free car. How times change.

Couldn't afford a 928 when I was young so bought a Renault Fuego (poor man's European hatchback.) 928's nice and all, but God, I wish I still had that car--never ever thought they'd become so rare.

I'd definitely take a nice 911 turbo, but the 928 has always been my favorite.
You'll never see me in a Mustang/Camaro/Corvette/Charger, etc. I can't stand common dime-a-dozen cars.
I like my cars like I like my women, weird and vindictive. The car that replaced my first 928 was a Subaru SVX!

HA! I can fit all my friends in my Boxster and still have room for a cooler in the passenger seat.

This will always be a beautiful car in my mind.
It took me places where my bicycle couldn't. Even better--I got to bring my friends along 'for the ride'.

My first car is my 928. Like any first car I bought it and fixed it with my own money and time.
This forum has save my butt more times than I can count. Still wish I had a cool car story of old classics
like all of you guys do, besides the rodent munched 1980's Maserati BiTurbo my dad brought home.
Lets just say the car was donated and taken as a tax write off.

I tried a (then) new Fuego for size, and if the seat was right for reaching the pedals with my feet, I couldn't reach the steering wheel with my hands.
If the steering wheel was in reach, my knees were just below my earlobes.
Funkiest ergonomics I have EVER seen.
