928 Versions

928 Versions
So as a current 924 owner, I'm looking to upgrade, following the natural progression to a 928.
However, the question is what year of 928 I should get.
I want to be able to do all the work on the car myself.
I want galvanised chassis (not sure whether it's like 924 and only late models have that?)
I want no digital dashboard.
I want no ABS.
I want minimal electronics.
I want no Power Steering (but they all have that, right?)
I want a manual gearbox.
Given these criteria, what will be the best year of 928 for me to get? Currently I'm thinking a 928S would be the best option, but I'd love to hear some other opinions. I'm in the UK.

Hi Raize - best bang for the UK Pound for you would be an 84 S2 with the 310HP engine. It may have ABS though. If you have not done so already get on the UK board - lots of local help there as well.
PS: Welcome to Rennlist - you came to the right place

My power steering didn't work at one point. You definitely want power steering.
Sounds to me like you want a 78-79. Minimal electronics. Even the power door locks are vacuum. I think the CIS injection is completely mechanical? When did Jetronic injection start, 1980?

I'm gonna go with 80-83 928 S. It's got 300 horses, still uses CIS (knowing you have a 924 you should know all about how the system works ), non-interference I believe, and the electrics aren't any worse than that of an earlier car, with the possible exception of electric locks instead of vaccum-operated ones.

The type is irrelevant. Buy the best 16valve example you can afford. The 32 valve S4 is faster but more complex. The condition must be proven with records of maintenance, bills and ppi.

So, I'm looking at 16 valvers.
A 928, 928S, or 928S2.
Interesting points about the switch from k-jetronic to EFI.
Looking at the stats for these 3 models, it seems that the extra power is all at the top end of the rev range on the S and S2, with the base 928 having it's peak torque and power much lower down.
But of course stats don't say everything.
Is an S perceptibly quicker than a base 928? And is the EFI S2 perceptibly different in the way it delivers it's power to an S? Is the EFI as reliable as K-Jet?
Unfortunately I live in the highlands of Scotland so I can't just go and look at 928s for sale as they are all 200+ miles away. So I need to be pretty sure what I want before I start going to view cars.
Does anyone have a picture of a 928 next to a 924 or 944? I didnt find anything on google and I can't do the comparison myself, for the previous reason of being in the middle of nowhere.

You're better off waiting for someone with more experience to answer but, based on a sample of one pre-S I tried when looking to buy, I would say the extra horsepower of the S is noticeable.
The S2 has a four speed auto box and the S a three speed, so this will probably have a larger effect than the power delivery from the engine (the chance of finding a manual version of both models to do an actual comparison is low, if you're only interested in a manual gearbox then your choice will be severely limited); also, all S2 models have ABS, so they don't fit your original criteria.
As Roger said, join the UK mailing list at www.928.org.uk, there are owners who live in Scotland so you may be able to find some willing to show you their cars. There are also the Porsche club forums, PCGB and TIPEC - you may be able to find a meet near you where you can see 924s and 944s at the same time.
Here's one small picture
Failing that look on ebay for pictures - some of the Porsche literature and adverts of the time had images that featured a 928 alongside the other contemporary models.

CIS stopped in 80 for US. 78-79 US/Row are CIS, 80-83 RoW are CIS.
More than likely semantics, just wanted to clarify.

I'm hopefully going to the PCGB thingy at BlairAtholl this weekend, maybe I'll see some 928's there.
If not, an automatic S4 has just turned up for sale near me, so I'll have a look at that, even though it's completely the wrong model.
