Default Eccentric Clutch Mystery Pedal Issue

Hi Fellow 928'ers,

I have encountered a problem that might be another eccentricity of the 928, i've just never heard bout it; nor, encountered it.

It has to do with the clutch pedal on my 1986.5 928. So, before I start tesring into the pressure plate, slave, etc., I thought I'd ask the group.

Here's the problem, most days the clutch is just fine. On some days the clutch seems to lose it's pressure and the pedal drops, the car can still be driven; but, the clutch is funky and needs finagling to get the car to shift into gear. Hop in the car the next day and the pressure is fine, the clutch is fine.

Here's the two other odd things I've noticed - the hotter the day, sometimes; and I mean "sometimes," the worse the clutch pedal is. So, if the car sits outside in 85-90 degree heat, the pedal will drop; but, sometimes it won't. It just seems to happen on very warm days. Also, sometimes starting up the car first thing, in a cool morning, the pedal my start out bad; but, within minutes, the pressure builds back up and the clutch is fine.

So, before I go tearing into it, I thought if any of the forum members have experienced this eccentricity;and, if so, what part of the clutch could be the culprit?

Thanks for th input.

I'd suggest you start by looking for signs of fluid leakes, at peddel (master) and underneath at slave cylinder. No leakes, then blead the system.

When was the last time the brakes/ clutch was bled?
Should do it every two years, if you want to avoid issues.

You've got air in the system. Probably time to replace the clutch master and slave if they are more than 15 years old if the fluid hasn't been changed every 2-3 years.

also replace the flex line and the release arm bushing and the blue hose.

NOTE when clutch issues arise swapping out one part of the system will take just about as much time as swapping the complete system and in the long run will cost less time and money and possibly a tow bill

Davek9, Worf928, and MrMerlin,

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the advice. I thought of all the things you mentioned; however, it is such a periodic, intermittent problem, I did not know what exactly it could be. I should have given you guys more facts about the car.

My 86.5 928 has 52,000 miles on it.
No leaks.
Clutch was bled 2 years ago.
I only drive my 928 in the summer; but, I've had to drive it more in the last month because I'm rebuilding the engine on my Volvo Wagon.
Tranny Fluid in my 928 was replaced 2 years ago.
The Master and Slave are original to the car (so, they probably need to be replaced).
Since the weather has cooled in the last week, the clutch is fine.

I am hoping one of you great 928 lovers could point me in the direction of a good "how to tutorial" on replacing the Clutch Master and Slave. I used to have the entire 928 mechanics repair manual on my computer; but, it crashed and i lost it. But, I was hoping that someone may have posted a step by step "how to" on replacing the clutch Master and Slave. I've done a lot of work on engine things; but, have never "done" a Clutch.

Davek9, Worf928, and MrMerlin - Thanks again for responding to my post. I've owned two 928's and absolutely love my 86.5 (as I'm sure you guys love your 928's). I would like to fix the Clutch before the weather turns. not only so I can park it away for the winter in my garage; but also, so I can participate in the October Sharkfest. I hope "someone" on the forum; or, on another website has posted a "how to" with regard to replacing the Master and Slave and the Lines (if need be). Thanks guys - God Bless you all and your 928's !!

Thanks MrMerlin

I hope Colorado is doing better with the flooding. I'm a Native Coloradan and am from Boulder County (Longmont). I heard they evacuated Lyons - Jamestown is a mess and Big Elk Meadow off of highway 7 to Estes Park flooded. Also, heard Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs are a mess. I can't believe there's flooding all the way from the Springs to Greeley !! The only flood I remember was the Big Thompson Canyon flood when I was a boy. I guess you're glad to be in Aurora - have not heard of any water there. I just can't imagine all that flooding. Sorry to divert from the Forum's intent; however, when I saw you were from Colorado, I had to mention it.

Replace the bits mentioned and you'll be happy with the results.
