Roger: It worked in the sense of activating the DRLs, but caused the same issue of pod over-rotation with ignition on and engine off (I just posted this to Jeff's thread).

As noted in my earlier post, the new relay from you has the diode that Alan says is required, whereas the previous relay that was originally in that slot did not. If I learn how to do it, I could test the diode in the one you sent in case it is defective.

Martin please send the relay back so I can take it up with the manufacturer. I will credit you for the relay and shipping both ways. Did it cause other issues like Jeff?

Will do Roger and thanks! Perhaps you'll get better ones in time for my next order. You do take this customer service thing seriously

A diode is a one way gate. currant can flow one way but not the other (hense your ground issue) with a blown diode the flow can go either direction.
Really really good find you guys. This needs to be documented.

I think all S4's and later should get a condenser shield as there is nothing physical to prevent the headlight lift arm from rotating into the A/C condenser - the only limit is electrical. We have shown one mode (bad or incorrect DRL relay), but there are others including a dirty 'up' sensor in the motor gearbox, headlamp relay fault, a ground fault or other short, etc.

Martin I'll start a new thread on this so it is stand alone and searchable.

Agree a condenser shield would be a neat idea - someone should fabricate up a batch of these.

Working on it today in stainless steel.

I have been running a 53B relay in my US version 90GT and have twice had the same problem as Martin: over-rotation of the headlight motor and resulting arm contact with the condenser coil. I don't recall the exact situation the first time it happened, but when it did this today it was ignition on - engine off. It never did this before I started running a relay in the the DRL slot.

From the posts above, it seems I need a relay specifically for the DRL rather than the more generic 53B. Is the 53G mentioned previously the proper one, or is there another relay for this?

Additionally, will the 53B work so long as I make sure the engine is running before attempting to raise the headlights?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure I'd really call that working...?

Get the right relay - or add a diode on the back of the CE panel. I honestly think that would be a better solution. Those expensive custom relays for the sake of a single diode are crazy. You can get 1A diodes that plug into ATM fuse holders - so you could make it neat and easily replaced just in case.

Hi Alan - Is the 53G (431 951 253G) the right one, or is there a different part number for this application? Thanks!

141.951.253G is indeed the correct relay with the diode. In this case its a generic non-Porchse specific part used on other VW/Audi cars so its somewhat cheaper at only about 4x the cost of a regular generic Bosch style relay (maybe ~$20-$25). Check with Roger or on on eBay for used...

Roger recommended the Porsche original 141.951.253G to me as the safest route after my experience, and Jeff's, with a generic version of the same. It is in transit now.

BTW, I installed Jeff's stainless steel shield already, albeit painted black.

Hmmm. I have the 53B pictured below but will try the 53G. I never had an issue with over-run until I put this relay in the DRL slot. Perhaps a coincidence, but I'll go with the item that was last changed prior to the issue showing itself.
