Jeff can you tell me why it was defective please - we sell a few of these and I need to ensure there is not a bigger problem than one bad relay.

Roger - Today I installed the one I received from you last week and it caused the same problem as the relay that I pulled out - namely the headlight pods over rotate and jam when the relay is installed and when the lights are turned on with the ignition on but the engine not running. The DRL function works as expected if the engine is running.

My car may be an exception in that it is from Japan and may have some minor lighting differences - for example the fogs can be run with high beam as Alan explained and I confirmed.

Roger. After confirming with Alan on how to test the relay's diode, it turns out the diode is not functioning. This is letting a certain amount of current go back through the system. This amount of current is enough to cause the headlight motor/relay setup to think the motor is not up and just keeps on going (with the ignition off).

Alan did an explanation in the thread for me to test it and what to expect. I posted the results and he indicated that this is a defective condition.

Perhaps your manufacturer of this relay can find the fault they are having.

Jeff - I am sorry a product that I sell caused you problems. I just put a $100 credit on your account to help soften the blow. Please send back the bad relay and I will credit you for the relay and the shipping both ways. I will be talking to the manufacturer via my wholesaler to sort out further issues and will not sell this relay until I know it is fixed.

As with many of these systems - risks folks thinking they have their lights on normally at dusk when really they don't. I don't think it's such a great system overall for that reason - and so it is not a net help to others/you if you ask me... If it activated fogs and markers I think it would be more beneficial.

Thanks for the clarification- after working with Shell for many years and latterly with BP and their collective 3 and 4 letter acronyms -last thing I need is such for my hobbies! Crikey I am lucky these days if I can remember what I ate for breakfast!

I hope and trust my '93 928 GTS chassis does not have this feature set- we get the local police on our case if they see fog lights illuminated believe it or not!

Regards

Fred

Roger. All I can say is WOW. I didn't ask you for anything like this!! Like Martin said, you take customer service seriously (like I didn't know this already!!).
Please let me know what the manufacturer says about the relays being defective per Alan's direction.
I was very bummed about the condenser but in the end all will be good.

I am going to make a condenser shield and then once we confirm the new relays are good we will try again.

Roger - here is what I posted before on this to Jeff:

"Jeff - Your DRL relay is busted - the diode that is supposed to be in the coil circuit either isn't there or is short circuited... you can test this - relay should conduct with continuity tester between 86 (+) -> 85 but not 85 (+) -> 86. I think you will find yours conducts both ways..."

If you have a DMM with a diode tester - test some more of your stock to see if there is a conduction difference 86 (+) -> 85 (-) - should conduct vs 85 (+) -> 86 (-) should not conduct.

Others if you have a DRL relay you haven't installed I'd suggest you do this test too...

Alan
