OK so I took tips from this thread and changed my ad. I will let it sit until the right buyer comes along.

The only question I have is...

Is this Kijiji web site a popular place to look for cars in Canada?

Good add. GLWS

I, too, like the new ad. Seems funny to me, though, that someone who works in the ad business would be frustrated by having difficulty selling something

I've bought sold my share of cars in my young life, too many to count (stopped counting at 20). I've sold 2 928s, actually. The first one sat for a while because it didn't run (I bought it for parts originally) but after swapping stuff from my other 928, I got it going; well, mostly going (battery decided to die when the tow truck appeared to haul it to the new owner). But, that doubled the price and off it went in a matter of days. This one was still at the low end of the price pool, though.

The second one was a much longer sales period and yes I received an insane number of low ball offers. I was asking what I thought was a very fair price for the car, especially given I had over two decades of experience with the car. Plus it had some tasteful upgrades. It took nearly two years to sell, but I eventually got just short of my asking price. It had 2 PPIs in the middle, one of which was derailed by a crazy mechanic who claimed it had frame damage (the outer seat rails had been smooshed from the car having been jacked up in the wrong place many moons ago). And it sat for a long, long time. But, my patience was rewarded, as was its buyer.

I've come to the conclusion that this car has a) a bad rap out there historically from the auto media but b) some uninformed people who see this press still love it and they don't know why (yet). B are the low ballers for the most part, or at least the ones who waste the most of your time hemming and hawing over the car.

Prices on these cars are also all over the map. $12k for a sorted 85 (though it needs an op gasket; not a cheap repair unless you DIY) seems about right to me, but that might be hard to swallow for someone who sees the "same" car elsewhere for under $5k. Obviously that $5k car, while it might run and drive, isn't on par, but it's hard to explain the difference to someone who's never owned a 928, or even any Porsche for that matter.

In any event, cars in this price range require patience to own, and more patience to sell. No offense to the GTS guys, but I still can't understand why some of them go for $50k+ while a fully sorted, low mile, S4 maxes out around half that. My car is for all intents and purposes a GTS, minus air bags and a digital dash (and bigger hips). The market is unfortunately irrational for our cars, and thus requires waiting for the right person to buy. We thus require one of two kinds of buyers for a sorted 928 sold at a premium: a) someone who knows Porsches, or even better, 928s, and understands why the car is priced where it is, or b) someone who knows cars but is completely uninformed about the 928! Frustrating this more, though, are guys who have nice examples but are too impatient to wait long enough to sell the car at a premium, and sell them cheap to just be done with it. I've bought several cars from people like that. Their loss is my gain. But it also skews the market.

Ultimately the sale of a 928 at a premium is an event that takes patience and determination. If you absolutely must get $12k, be prepared to wait, because sub-$5k examples of the same car are readily available. GLWS.

I may just do the OPG, I have the parts a lift and Cosmos old engine brace.

I could get away without mentioning it, but I prefer to be more honest about any faults. It really doesn't leak that much.

Hmmmm, if Kijiji compares to Craigslist, don't people use that site for finding cheap stuff? In the USA people look for cars on ebay, autotrader, and cars.com long before the start looking on craigslist. Everything I've ever listed on Craigslist got a bunch of low ball offers and not real serious shoppers.

It's on Kijiji, auto trader.ca, eBay and cars.com.

Kijiji is very popular here, it's actually owned by eBay.

Adam,

Nice work, the new ad reads well.

I would also suggest doing the OP gasket, it takes some time but it avoids the problem of a buyer discounting their offer by the shop rate for the job.

Also consider RKD's suggestion of a web page for the car with bigger pics and all the details. That can start as a word doc, which you can email to interested folks when they inquire.

Good luck!

Adam,
Wait it out if you have the time,928's are only going up in value.
I like his idea of the web page.Just worked on one with 18 picture
view with wider screen showing 1024x768 in size instead of the
normal 600 or 800 pixel width.
Good luck with sale also.

If its a tiny gasket leak, you can get away with torquing the bolts a tiny bit. Got me another 5k miles out of mine. Just don't over do it.

I would take any offer over $9k and get it sold.

The Canadian housing bubble is deflating, Stock market is looking like 2008 and interest rates are rising.

Here is a 88 for $6k,

89 for $9500 obo,

Not as in tune with Canada's economy as I am the US (and I'm no expert on ours either!) so that is very useful information; but FWIW, 928 values have been steadily creeping up over the last 2 years, setting aside the occasional outlier "great deal." To find a truly sorted S4 under $10k would take a miracle (edit: the 89 you linked looks pretty solid; what's the exchange rate right now?). And the sorted OBs are commanding a premium now, too.

Holy smokes! That '89 is a nice car. If it were a manual, I would buy it on the spot, if the paint were good and original!
