There is a vertically-mounted switch operated by opening and closing the hood, located just behind the right-side engine bay crossmember.
I think it serves two purposes, one to be a safely interlock that prevents the fans from running when the hood is open and two, to turn on the light on the underside of the hood (which I believe also requires the parking lights to be on).
Does this switch perform any other function?

It also triggers the alarm when the hood is opened. And on my car the switch is part of the inside lighting wiring, meaning the inside lights do not turn off automatically when the hood is open.
Btw cars with earlier MY have a separate switch for the under hood light ( as of 90 or 91).

On a GTS it is not related to inside or outside lighting. So just fan after-running disable, light on (direct) and alarm detect for hood.
Aryan - on an '89 the hood switch should be a tilt switch (on when up) but only if the marker lights are on... it should not be related to the interior lights at all (or even this switch)...

Good thread Don, I remember now reading that discussion.
My fans have never run on in six years of Texas summer driving and my hood switch is in dubious condition, the retaining tabs broken and rigged in place, possibly working or not. So I was pondering the option of taking out the switch entirely and defaulting the circuit to 'hood open' since I rarely stick my fingers anywhere near the fans after the engine's been running and so not worried about protection from that.
I also don't care about the hood light, but might prefer not to trigger the alarm ...

Hood open = hood light on and alarm contact open. The alarm will still arm without it (won't protect the hood anymore). It won't be quite normal - the LED flash parttern will tell you it armed abnormally.. Otherwise will work OK.
Personally I'd fix it - in case I ever needed a hood light - I'd imagine that replacement switches are readily available - easy replacement... Roger would know...
