Default WHAT IS THIS pic's

While doing my height adjustment on my rear shocks I cames across what appears to be a filter on the rear wheel well passenger side. Have never seen it referred to in any forum, what is its function and should it be changed.

Thanks

Lon

It is a valve which blocks the fuel flow to the engine if the car goes upside down.

Thank you Leon, I thought that the PO might have put an extra filter in there.

Thanks!

Don't agree with that....if you follow the hose you will see it comes from the expansion overflow tank and connects to the hardline that goes all the way forward to the carbon canister connection. That valve is not even in the engine fuel supply line. At least on both my 86.5 and 90GT it wasn't. Possibly later cars have a "tip over" valve but that is not it. PET calls it a shut-off valve (29) but it only shuts off fluid flow to the carbon canister, not the engine.

Cheers!

I was looking at PET also.
Then what is the function of a shut off valve there ?

I have wondered that too many times If it was for roll-over protection one would assume it would be a valve in the supply line. I can only guess that it allows the expansion tank fumes to "burp" past that valve and stops fuel from making it all the way to the carbon canister. The valve has a ball in it that can be heard rattling if you take the valve out. But I am just guessing

Cheers!

It is to stop the flow of fuel in the case of a roll over. With car upside down the normal engine supply pickup would be at the top so there would be no need to stop the flow in the supply line as there would be no fuel at the pickup. However the vent line would be at the bottom an would be an open path from the tank out through the vent system. So when injerted the check valve shuts down the vent line to stop the fuel spillage.

Required to pass the US fuel system integrity test, a portion of which specifies that the vehicle be mounted on a rotisserie and rotated with Stoddard solvent in the tank instead of gasmoline. More leakage than small amount equals a fail.
