I sometimes receive "the wave. " I always give it in turn, but never initiate anymore. Same as on my motorcycle... used to be that nearly 95% of other bikers gave the wave. Now, it is maybe 5%.
When I'm in stop and go traffic (Southern Calif.) and in the "fast" lane (at 3 mph), I always pull over far to the left to leave room for lane splitters. I'd say half or less now give me the "peace" sign. Used to be the vast majority. Ah well.

Think if it this way
I the era of 78 thru 81. Porsche was selling about 5000 cars per year. TOTAL
Today the average buyer of a 991 or a Cayenne ( George is not included because it's only a car to tow a 928) cannot even find the dipstick. let alone take the time to flash the lights.

I get a mixed response. There is a new 991 that I used to pass every morning driving my daughters to preschool last year. We waved at each other every day.
I always initiate a wave and flash the lights and get one back about half the time. It seems like 7 out of 10 Porsches i see today are Boxsters just because they have fallen into the highly affordable range now. I think a lot of these guys are moving into Porsche from other import sports car camps and don't understand the Porsche family mentality. Initiating a flash or wave is my way of trying to impart some of that, and see where it leads.

Well, in addition to my 928 (which nearly everyone loves) I own a Cayenne, too. Try waving at ANY make Porsche from a Cayenne and they think... "That dude's driving a Vdub SUV"
We can't fix people...just be the best version of ourselves I like Porsches... particularly with hot women behind the wheel.
My kid can't wait to drive his Guards Red 924S to high school. Private school, bunch of kids whose parents lease them stuff, never had a Porsche drive on the lot... maybe I am one of those people, too

Funny - I actually alwasy wave at Cayenne's too just to see if they ever get it. So far none of them have. I'm up in Jacksonville for work every now and then and I'll be sure to wave at the Cayennes's I see. Who knows, one day you may get a wave from a hellbronze 928. Be sure to wave back!

Just last sunday i got a wave from two guys on a mint red early 80's 911 targa. The driver went out of his way to catch up, kept blowing his horn, and passenger give us a hang loose sign.
Ofcourse i give a wave and beep and smile and thumps up.
Nice guy. Five minutes later some as...l with a newer 911 turbo almost run us of the road.

I try to wave at any other Porsche I see. My wife drives our Cayenne most days and does nothing. It truly is the difference between "driving" a Porsche and merely "steering". Most non Porsche owners recognize my 911 as one but only the diehards recognize my 928.

I was driving the 928 yesterday and flashed lights at a 997 as we approached an intersection on a green light and moving towards each other; no response at all.
It happens in my GT3 as well so I figure the driver of the 997 leases his Porsh.

Have to wonder if it's elitism, or jealousy
There is a nice blue early 911 in town that I have seen on a couple occasions. After following behind it for a few miles on my way to work one day, I ended up alongside it. The driver did not bother to acknowledge me as I tried to give him a thumbs-up.
Same story with an attractive blonde in a 991(?) convertible last week. Ended up alongside her at a traffic light, completely ignored me. And she was behind me for at least a mile so I doubt she could have missed the PORSCHE across the bumper.
