As much as I love my 84 928, I've been thinking of replacing her with an s4 as I said in an older post. Problem is, this 08 BMW 328xi with a six speed manual caught my eye. The BMW would be more practical for kids, but then I'd need to leave the world of 928 ownership. Decisions decisions!

I have an 03 BMW 330xi with a 6speed as a daily driver. I suggest dumping money into the 928 instead. You will enjoy it more in the long run. The BMW will just be another car .

I like both the early cars and the later cars.....although they are very underpowered, compared to what we have available, today. I'm pretty sure that a Prius will drive away from one....
Before I'm done, I'm going to stuff a 2 valve 6.5 liter engine into my son's '83. I personally think an early car (lighter weight) with more power, bigger brakes, more tire, would be very fun.....much like what people are doing with "early" 911's, these days.

I own and have owned both, so I'd offer that you get an slightly older BMW to compliment the 84 and keep both, too.

I've had the pleasure of owning 7 BMW's ('91 525i, '95 840ci, '96 328i, '97 328i, '99 528iT, '85 635csi) in the last five years. I currently have an '85 Euro 5 speed. I'd take my 928 hands down over all of them.

I've spent some time the last few days cleaning and fixing little things on the car. Almost everything works at this point. I was wondering if anyone had a pushrods for the rear hatch motor. For some reason, mine works but the rod is missing. Soon I also want to spend some time replacing my leaky cam tower gasket. Th smell of burning oil after driving hard is annoying. It leaks on to the exhaust manifold.

I go through some of these mental excercises too from time to time. I've specifcally thought about an S4 and my mom has a '06 3 Series 6 speed. (Gotta love a 65 year old woman that insists on a manual trans). I've driven it on numerous occasions and its a great car - very smooth, good quality components, and has been very reliable just corssing 100k miles. The Audi S4 is really nice on the inside. The seats are among the best I've ever sat in - but to me the exterior styling was a bit bland - at least on the B6 era cars. The B7s got a little more aggressive.
But I just love the feel of the older classics and for me its worth the idiosyncracies of their charm to put up with for daily duty. Yes, I keep a closer watch on my voltage gauge than than anyone else who drives a 21st centruy car. I watch the coolant temps closer. I don't reset my trip meter becasue that damn VDO gear is prone to break (even after you replace it).
So we put up with all this crap. But we do it because we get to go into our garage inthe morning and look upon what was probably the pinnacle of automotive engineering for its day - and is still as much a work of art as it is a design excercise in ergonomics. There is nothing like it. So...in spite of better judgement that periodcally tells me to et something newer and relaible (I've been eyeing the new Subaru BRZ as a fun daily driver as well), I can't bring myself to part with the 928.
