Default What is a Fair Price for an 85 Transaxle?

I have an opportunity to buy a 1985 BW gearbox. The box has 120k miles, is a non-running car (cracked head), and I have to pull it. Non LSD.

Thank you.

I'd pay no more than 2-300. Especially if I have to pull it

Since it's still in the 'donor', how's the shift centering spring? If it's floppy, it may be cracked or broken, and new ones are NLA.

Thanks Rob.

He said the centering spring is fine, but I am not very confident he knew what I was asking. That is the first thing I planned on checking (along with trans code) as I am dealing with that very broken spring in my gearbox.

I am in an irrational flurry of anxiety over this fvcking spring and a string of NLA parts.

I guess I am exploring all of my options.

An intact "core" (meaning it doesn't work but there are not pieces inside rattling around) '85 Borg Warner Gearbox is worth $750.....at least it is, in California.

Hell, if the syncros are good they are worth that, by themselves.

I'd be thrilled to have the core, for that price!

They are not making any more of the pieces inside that gearbox....when they are gone, they are gone. And the volume of pieces that will ever be needed virtually guarantees no one will ever be able to rationalize making replacement parts, on an aftermarket basis.

In Europe 2 or 3 times that is starting price.

I don't mind saying this car and gearbox have been in Craigslist for months. I think I passed it on awhile ago.

I am going down to check it out and see if I can safely remove it on his property.

Iza gonna say, 750 sounds like a steal if you didn't have to pull it. Takes a couple hours and isn't all that hard so i'd say get it.

I bought an intact, running 86.5 car with rather bad rocker / side damage for 1900.
Drove it into garage. Came with LSD 5 spd, engine, nice interior...

Its another way to go.

There was a time, when this exact stuff was happening in the "356" world. It's so funny to look back and remember entire cars selling for less than $1000.

I tell this one story, all the time....I almost bought a really nice running '64 Carrera 2...for $4,000.

Here's the reality....I took apart a 356 gearbox last week. Ran low on gear oil. Ring and pinion, all 4 gears galled. I literally put it back together, put it back into the car, and told the customer that he should ignore the noise it made and run it until one of the gears completely fails.....because I had no realistic solution.

That's what is going to happen with the 928 vehicles, except worse. These cars are infinitely more complex. If I was 40 years old, I'd be buying and "rat holing" everything I could find, like this.

It seems that an early 5 sp with t tube and clutch/housing went for 1500 or so on the SF area CL recently
