Well I am making fairly steady progress. I got my cam gears and oil pump gears off without a puller. When I say they are shot, I mean they are deeply notched by the belt and they have razor sharp edges on their teeth. They look like some kind of cutting tools, I guess they are kind of. I went through 4 cans of brake cleaner and the engine looks a lot cleaner and it will be much easier to work on now. I have about 80% of the WP gasket off, and will use Permatex gasket remover and 3m pads to finish it off.
BTW Roger's cam gears seem to be for 32V engines only. Mine will be new Porsche.
Thanks for the help,
Dave

I am pretty sure my pump is original and 29 years and 120K miles old.
!!!

You made a good bet to suspect the water pump. Put that one out to pasture.

Hi,
The front of the engine is all back together now. I have my alternator out for repair because of a battery drain, so I started it on battery, and it ran great. I let it warm up and topped up the coolant. So far the front of the engine is bone dry, we will see how it goes. Should get the alternator this week and be back on the road by the weekend.
Thanks for all the encouragement.
Dave
