Congats. It's a special joy to hear a car start after such a long sleep. Especially when it had been "condemned" to be dismantled.

I don't blame you for holding of on the motor mounts, you didn't know if the motor was going to have to come out or not.

And I can't resist. I've quoted this line a time or two over a restart.

I'm going to go with "yes" to that.

Nice collection of Saabs!! Interesting to see some Saab officianados also acquiring the Porsche 928 taste :-)

Nice colour and sounds like 928 will be a solid acquisition.

Cheers

I actually had a taste for 928s (and Porsches in general) well before I ever knew what a Saab even was...but I have made a career out of working on Saabs.

I like the color a lot, and I feel much better about the car now that I have heard it run. Should work out fine...

So is the first drive today? (hopefully, assuming gearbox isn't toast). If so, we should meet up. I drove the Kraken to work today.

Nope, the new hose that goes from the screen above to the fuel pump will arrive tomorrow. Plus, I can't really go for a drive without taillights. Not to mention the front bumper is held on by two bolts and there is no hood on it (and the left fender is not bolted on). Maybe a drive around my parking lot.

Until then, I am working on other aspects of the car, including putting the driver's door panel back on. I have figured out everything except this:

What does this harness go to? The other end is also unplugged, under the dash near the 14-pin connector and white 18-pin connector. It is part of the factory door harness. Anybody know?

That hooks to the blinking light in the door lock stem.

How could it reach over there? Is there a continuation of this harness when the car has a factory alarm (which my car does not)? Maybe that is why it is unplugged at both ends?

I am not at my computer, but if you do a search by my name I had a thread of replacing the diode for the door lock and it had pictures of the whole assembly.

87 S4 doesn't have blinking LED's in the lock stems. Those started in 1989.

That harness is for the alarm IIRC - I'll have a dig and see if I can find pics of 87 vs 89.

Not all 87's have an alarm - you can tell by the length of the key whether you did.

Key blade lengths are 42mm for non-alarm, 53mm for alarm.

I'll go check for pics of both door interiors

I definitely do not have any lights in my door lock stems, so I assume this is only on cars with factory alarm systems.

I got the driver's door panel back on, and everything works. Memory seats, both power mirrors, door locks, all of it. I think this car likes me...
