Default Asheville, NC 1985 Euro S2 Rescue Mission July 26-28, 2013

My car has been in storage in Asheville, NC for 2 years following major maintenance which resulted in it's incapacitation and an opportunity to attempt a recovery has presented itself.

The known issues are:
--Dead Battery
--2 year old fuel with preservative
--Cranked vigorously, but would not start following afforementioned maintenance (most likely a CPS/Fuel pump issue)
--Dead clutch pedal (most likely a bad slave cylinder)

The intention is:
--Get car to start and run (burn down gas)
--Syphon gas remaining (or all if the first thing is unexecutable) and execute a long term storage plan (~3years)
--Troubleshoot clutch as much as able
--Inspect for other problems which have developed in the last two years

What I need:
--Anyone who can help with the troubleshooting and sanity checking to meet me in Asheville or anywhere between Virginia Beach, VA and Asheville (I'm driving a really sweet mini-van down)

What I can give:
--Overnight accomodation and bar tab in Asheville
--En route conversation

Anyone interested?

I'll have to consider that Neil...honestly it's going to end up about the same though. I'll look around a bit and see if I can take advantage of relocating the car.

My family and I are being sent to South Korea for the next three years and as such I will have to store the car during that time. From the looks of things, Raleigh is no better (and in some ways worse) for that than Asheville.

That said, I'm still obliged to try and get things up and running--if for no other reason than my own personal satisfaction (and mental health).

If there is anyone in the Raleigh area who is interested in a jaut up to Asheville, I'd be happy to have the help.

Well nuts...anyone know who has a troubleshooting guide for the CPS/Fuel pump/no-start thing? Maybe I can go it alone.

These are my steps when checking a euro:

Will it start on starter fluid directly into the air intake?
Does the fuel pump run briefly when you try to start?
If it does, Jump the fuel pump relay and try again,
if not- Start at the relays and work back.

If it does not try to start on starter fluid,
pull both distributor caps and crank - are they turning
if no-
broken dizzy drive belt?
if yes
suspect final stages, ignition coils, wires, etc

Now have spark and fuel and still no start - suspect cps.

PM me for my phone number while you are there, I have all the manuals and wiring diagrams, etc, I'm pleased to help.

I don't think I'd worry about the fuel.
That's an accident waiting to happen.
Fuel filter should handle any issues.

Relays can be handled by jumpers.

CPS MIGHT be cross referenceable to an Advance Auto part.
(BMW version, 944 version, etc)
They can be a pita if stuck though.

I like to see grounds on Euro right camcover (2) cleaned. and the one behind cam gear cover, same side, also cleaned.

Navy?

Good point about fuel issues, Chris. The CPS is my #1, even poor grounds should get it to lite up, i'm still going with major failure, not electrical issues.
If it fires on starter fluid we have a good clue .
I'm thinking navy also, daughter is up there but AF.

This car was disabled by a shorted CPS which resulted in one of the several repairs that ultimately is the reason this car is stuck in Asheville in the first place. A failed attempt to remove and replace the CPS resulted in me having to leave the car in the care of the shop while I executed a cross-country move to CA with the intent of eventual recovery.

Bottom line, the CPS repair which was conducted did not result in a car which would start. I have reason to doubt the repair itself and it might also be a combination of issues. I am proceding from the optimistic point that the CPS was actually repaired (and yet still will not start) and I want to reconfirm/isolate it from the problem.

Whereas I am going to be away for three years, I'm not willing to accept the liability if there is an accident or fire which occurs at the storage unit and my car full of gas aggravates the problem. The car is going to stay in Asheville for the foreseeable future but I am obliged to attend to it in any case.

Neil--I will definitely get ahold of you before I leave. I can eliminate the distributor but not the whole ignition system. I'll be in touch.

Chris--I'll take a look at the grounds for sure. I've got some other preservation work to take care of in any case. I'm a Marine--been at Naval Postgrad School and Defense Language Institute for the last three years.

You might want to replace the CPS again, regardless.

Oh, I completely agree about the CPS...it just won't happen on this trip. Maybe sometime in 2016 or so. Honestly I'll probably have to pull the motor to get it done right. Seems like the "repair" that was done was in fact a bunch of JB Weld--not sure if it's a new sensor in there or the old (broken) one.

We'll see tomorrow.

Tim, tried to call you a couple of times, seems like each time you answered and hung up, maybe the number didn't look right to you - area 858 - San Diego - but i'm in Cary, NC.
