If I wanted to try hooking my multimeter (yes I have one for testing my battery) to the multiplug that connects to the fixture can I find out what pin powers what bulb by looking at the wiring diagram or is there some other schematic that describes what each pin on each connector does?

My WSM volumes have wiring diagrams up to MY 87 in big volume and MY 94 & 95 in the smaller volume, and is so labeled that way on the factory cover labels. I am going to assume your year is similar to my MY. That being said, pin 6 is power for L stop filament. 3 is power for the L tail light filament. Pin 2 is ground.

If anyone knows if these MY's have different WD's, please chime in.

Carpet out of the way. Open the hatch door to the spare tire. You will then see various electrical components on the fore (front) aspect. The grounds are up against the front wall.

Here's what I found. The pins all have voltage. I probed around a bit with my multimeter. The tab that provides contact for the tail light in the socket broke off. Looked fine but was corroded.

You guys are the best.

Where do I get the Nissan Qwest socket? Advanced auto parts? I am comfortable soldering a connection, that's just a mechanical thingy. Shrink tubing is easy too. Understanding wiring diagrams. I am a dufus.

Jeff,
Sorry, don't know where to get the socket. Someone will drop in.
About the wiring diagrams... I read your posts, and you are one of the advanced members here. I went through the pdf by Alan that I put up earlier, and after about an hour I was very comfortable with the 'old' and the new wiring diagrams. You strike me as the type of mind to complete the circle.

I know it should be easy. Something about electrical just makes my brain go fuzzy.

I can really enjoy tearing into an engine and doing pistons, bearings, all that. Electrical just makes me go.. errrr, duh, what?

I'll read Alan's book again. I bet it is just a matter of making something click. Like diving into new software and figuring out what the programmer(s) was (were) thinking.

Oh, I found the sockets at Advance Auto parts after reading this.

https://rennlist.com/forums/diy-subm...lacements.html

Gonna tackle it next week before the Sharks On the Mississippi that I am hosting. Of course I have to get through Lasik on the 24th first . . . . .

Default rear light

maineporsche.....87s4 aut i found the ground area under the plastic black cover in spare tire well above battery. question is all grounds and wiring looks good, i have an intermittent running light and side marker lights out on left side only.

as for sock replacement, i used napa so i second alan....you do need to use an exacto knife to make adjustments for locking tabs plastic. also the wiring can be adjusted for single or double contacts.

single contact has 2 grounds as i recall.

in order to splice to your existing harness....black is ground on napa and brown is ground on your harness, then there is a yellow and green on napa....

maybe alan can chime in, but you need to splice the right remaining 2 wires...

I ordered my from Advance Auto parts store here in town. Here in a few days. $8.00. Looks pretty simple to wire. Three wires going to old socket, three wires going to new socket. Just match up the ground and figure out which one gives power to which part of the bulb.

Maine Porsche has sparked me to learn more about electrical an I am going to start by reading my way through Alan's posts. He knows a lot about electrical stuff. Maybe it will click like mechanical stuff just does for me.

Its easy to probe the original and new sockets to map the color conversion for pins to wires with an ohmmeter.

Default Tailight

Alan...no way near advanced as you on electrics.

This is coming from someone who cannot chase down why running lights left side marker lights intermittently come on with headlights on. Left basically non functional right side good.

I took apart all side marker lights chased wires...and checked bulbs and thanks to maineporsche found rear trunk grounds and still no joy.

No side markers and running light on left side.

Sometimes it comes on. If it comes on then I hit a bump it goes off....it is driving me insane.

I have removed rear tailight and side markers at least 30x to date....

Well I want to thank Alan and MainePorsche for the help and encouragement to fix the tail lights. I had to wire in new sockets. Used the write up about the Nissan Quest sockets. Both of mine were bad. I built two new ones and now I have nice bright tail lights and brake lights.

Maybe I'll tackle a Tech GT ignition system now!!! JK

Jeff,
As we say in Maine, 'Well there ya go'. Am happy you worked it through.
Thanks again for the help with the injectors.
