I am not a 944 Turbo fan but this is a fun drive!
Don't get me wrong, the 951 is capable of some serious power (1/2 the 928 )..... as the owner of two Audi Coupe Quattro's, I have a soft spot for the 5-banger.

For a woman to say that, she was probably 1) an owner and member in the local PCA who drives a late model 911 or Boxster or 2) her husband drives a 911 of any age.

How many years is it now that people still have a perception. Of the 928? It's not going to change unless perhaps porsche unveils a new coupe and even then.. Just enjoy your car. People that really know cars will recognize it for what it is. It's like a true litmus test..

I know a guy who's putting a hot-rodded 5-cylinder Audi turbo motor in a 924. It'll probably go pretty fast.

Let's see if I understood this correctly. Two-valve engine with mild camshafts. Pressure ratio of (24+14.7)/14.7 = 2.63. Producing 540/3.1 = 174 hp/l boosted and 540/3.1/2.63 = 66hp/l boost adjusted. I think that's a good result.

I was at one time tempted to get a runout 912 and stick a Hi-po california VW crate engine in it. then **** off all the porsche purists by saying it's a VW. (limited edition)

My neighbor who had owned a 912 all but called me a liar could not believe I just bought an '82 V8 Porsche.....had to be a six.

I offered him 100 to one odds and he finally backed down.

Heck this does not sound like a big deal to me. They are old lady's. If you want to talk about disrespect. I had a bunch of drunks **** on my 928 one night. It did not end well for them.

I consider it misunderstanding (the ladies in the op, not the p!ssing!), rather than disrespect.

I have had two similar instances: 1) "Nice Ferrari." from a woman in a parking lot (I just said "thanks" and smiled and carried on) and 2) In traffic, some guys in a work truck asked me if I had "dropped a Chevy in that Porsche?" When I told them it was a stock Porsche V8, jaws started dropping and asking questions.

I get questions wondering if the car is 6 cylinders and if it is rear engine'd. I tell them 8 in the front. They are usually confused as most have never seen or heard of a 928 before. I never usually get bad remarks about the car. When people do try to belittle my car and put their 911 on a pedestal they usually talk about mechanical faults. I talk about the faults in their 911 like overheating, engine fires, valve adjustments every 6 months and the list goes on until they quiet down. The last time I did this was a long time ago. I like people who just like to talk about each others cars and have fun, and not try to insult each other. It gets tiring -_-.

Also the chief-mechanic of my nearest porsche dealer said it's not a real porsche....and he was starting to change the oil on a cayenne diesel....
So women are women and have some excuses....but a porsche man....

I also have a big soft spot for the Audi 5cyl. My 95 S6 has a 2.2L 20vt. I've done a bit of work to it and it's putting out 340-360hp and probably an equal amount of torque. I've got a bigger turbo ready to go in as well that will put it right at or just over 400hp.

This created a problem when shopping for a Porsche to use as my summer car. One of my major requirements was that it can't be slower than my winter car. That's tough when your winter car is a turbo 5cyl Audi with lots of mods. A 928 S4 or GT was the only car that fit and was in my budget.

Both cars are completely different in character, but complement each other well. The 928 has gobs of torque at any RPM and accelerates effortlessly. The S6 has a slight lag while the turbo spools then accelerates violently. I have to be a little careful with my right foot in the 928 to not spin the tires, but the S6 can be matted in any situation and any weather with little regard for traction. It just grabs and gos. Both are great cars and it's a pleasure having the choice of which to drive.

Before the S6 I had a pair of Audi Coupe Quattros. The normally aspirated 2.3L 5cyl in those cars made all the right noises, but 163hp was just not enough power for me and swapping in a 20vt was too much work when I could simply buy a 4-door with that engine already installed from the factory. I sold the CQs and bought the S6 and couldn't be happier.

That would have been an incredible combination. There is an 18-part Youtube series on the conversion of a 924 to use the Audi AAN 20vt 5cyl engine.
