Heat for sure is an issue. But the gauge is inaccurate. I will see high 12's with everything on.....

And I don't know why I don't see that!

I don't believe the old saw that you don't need radiator fans at highway speeds even in super hot weather is true. If operating fans make a big difference, as they do for me, that's evidence that unassisted airflow at highway speeds is not adequate. But I would patch any extra holes in the fan shroud that allow air to bypass the radiator.

Well with the air on at 70mph she ran just over 2/3's. (past second white line) so I'm now a believer.

Really surprises me.

Now knowing this, I need a fan controller. I never bought one expecting the fan to cycle off and stay off on the highway.

http://www.dccontrol.com

check out that site. i have the FK-50 kit. progressive controller, and works FANTASTIC with the dual contour set up. spins them only as fast as they need to go. saves the juice.

It might work OK without fans under some cruising conditions, but hit a decent uphill grade and you'll find you need a fan. The early cars with much lower horsepower, seem more immune to this, although in theory, whether low or high horsepower motors, two 928s cruising at the same speed should be putting out the same horsepower and load on the cooling system. Automatics would be somewhat higher output than stick shifts. Anyway, my S4 auto, doesn't do so well, at least on any uphill grade, without BOTH fans. When one failed, it would go over the last white line and approach the red zone on grades. It was OK on level ground but improved when I fixed the bad fan.

The FK-55 looks perfect.

Where did you mount it?

55 is what is what I have. Lol

Power to jump post, ground to headlight ground post (by motor). I have yet to hook up the blue wire to the AC compressor, so it powers up to 50 percent when the ac is on. Works so well without it

Why not use the original Bosch alternators?
Are these supposed to have more amps?

I have the contour dual fans (like pictured above) and the fan housing sits perfectly inside the lip of the radiator allowing 100% coverage of the inside face of the radiator surface.

I am using a Hayden dual fan controller. Fist fan kicks on at selectable temp and the second comes on 10deg later. Both come on with AC.

I have an Bosch with no cooling duct (could not get it to fit) and also notice considerable voltage drop once heat soaked.

I have an AC Delco 105 AMP alternator in a box waiting for a chance to install hoping that will help but this thread makes me nervous.

Any one tried to attach a cooling shroud to the AC Delco style alternators?

so i had made a "wire cage" adapter that held on the stock shroud over the delco. no real difference that i could tell. some where there is a thread where someone had posted where the air is sucked in vs expelled from the delco units........

in the end, even with a little heat soak, i have no issues and more power.....

Think we could get pictures of the adapter rig up?

GM made a shroud that was used on mid 90s, 3.4L dohc Grand Prix, Lumina and Cutlass Supreme. I seem to recall that there were two different styles of alternator used, but both had cooling shrouds.
